-|-|-» In Vein: Sì, siete i primi italiani ad occuparsi di noi. Precedentemente siamo stati intervistati dalla stampa norvegese, tedesca, svedese ed americana. Congratulazioni!

Siete un gruppo emergente in un panorama musicale molto vasto. Come pensate di distinguervi dal resto delle infinite bands che popolano questa scena?

-|-|-» In Vein: Beh, è davvero difficile differenziarsi da tutte quelle buone bands. Ciò che pensiamo è di aver sempre cercato di creare una buona melodia costruita attorno ad una canzone. In secondo luogo non stiamo cercando di seguire una moda, ma semplicemente la musica che ci piace ascoltare

Prima di parlarci di come è nato il vostro attuale progetto vorrei sapere qualche dettaglio riguardo le vostre collaborazioni con i Skin Disease (Christer e Tom), Gothminister (Tom) e con vari progetti (Jarle)...cosa ci raccontate di queste passate esperienze?

-|-|-» In Vein: Christer e Tom fecero entrambi parte degli Skin Disease, Christer era il singer, naturalmente. Skin Disease è stata una band electro-industrial vissuta 2 anni. Ha fatto alcuni concerti come supporter agli Icon of Coil firmando per la da Zoth Ommog. Purtroppo l'etichetta fallì prima che l' album fosse realizzato.
Tom fa ancora parte del Gothminister (www.myspace.com/gothminister), Jarle sta lavorando su un nuovo progetto chiamato Substate (www.myspace.com/substatemusic). I Gothminister sono ben consolidati, i Substate invece faranno il loro primo concerto nel maggio 2009.

Potete ora descriverci come e perchè avete creato gli In Vein. Qual'è il nucleo che dà energia alla vostra musica e perchè questo nome? Forse ciò che scorre dentro le vostre vene è spirito ed anima electro?

-|-|-» In Vein: Quando gli Skin Disease si sciolsero Christer e Tom hanno voluto continuare a fare musica. E condividendo una birra alla festa annuale dell'elettronica di quel Natale l'idea In Vein è nata. Questo nome è stato scelto perché siamo cresciuti attraverso la musica elettronica e, come dici, è ciò che abbiamo nel nostro spirito e nell' anima. Vogliamo iniettare la nostra musica nelle vostre vene.

Le vostre idee nascono e si sviluppano in studio oppure crescono parallelamente a qualcos'altro che sperimentate nella vostra vita, esternamente alle pareti del vostro laboratorio sonoro?

-|-|-» In Vein: Davvero una bella domanda. La maggior parte delle nostre idee musicali sono nate al di fuori dello studio, nei luoghi in cui non è possibile registrare quella specifica sensazione. Intendo mentre sei sulla via del ritorno da una notte in città oppure mentre si è alla guida e così via. Ma, naturalmente, suonare in studio è anch'esso un buon modo per far nascere nuove idee.

Cosa offre la scena elettronica europea? Ritenete questo un genere che sta tramontando oppure notate in esso un particolare spirito di sopravvivenza e innovazione?

-|-|-» In Vein: La nostra impressione è quella che la scena electro sia in continua evoluzione in tutte le sue modalità, dal synth pop, tekno all'industrial. Quindi, ancora una volta, una buona melodia sarà sempre apprezzata. In questi tempi un sacco di artisti internazionali ed altrettante bands si "rubano" elementi o utilizzano il suono della scena elettronica (Madonna, Britney Spears, The Killers, ecc.) Quindi ... La sintesi della nostra risposta è: Sì, crediamo che la scena elettronica europea continuerà ad evolversi ed essere innovativa.

"Strangled Voices" è il vostro cd debutto caratterizzato da irresistibili melodie e ritmiche molto dinamiche. Quali impressioni avete tratto da questa prima esperienza? Cosa corregereste in questo album, se ci fosse qualcosa che non vi ha convinto completamente?

-|-|-» In Vein: Quando abbiamo composto "strangled Voices" avevamo il tempo limitato e poche risorse economiche, così naturalmente ora potremmo trascorrere molto tempo ad elencare i dettagli da correggere. Ciò che considerariamo oggi come l'elemento peggiore è proprio quando registrammo l'album che ha avuto Christer "freddo" per la maggior parte del tempo, concedendoci inoltre un limitato periodo per lavorare con la sua voce. Ma riteniamo comunque di essere riusciti bene alla fine!

L'album è stato prodotto da Alex Jarlew. Parlateci di lui e di come è nata questa collaborazione...

-|-|-» In Vein: Alex Jarlev è un nostro buon amico ed è anche il "not singing half" della band norvegese Panzerveps. Oltre Panzerveps egli ha realizzato grandi remix per X: machina, Conetik, Code 64 e Gothminister! Abbiamo sempre ammirato il suo lavoro e quando ha trovato l'oppotunità di produrre il nostro album siamo stati felici!

"Invitation" è una traccia davvero interessante, ballabie e melodiosa. Di cosa parla, concretamente e come l'avete concepita?

-|-|-» In Vein: E' una canzone che parla di qualcuno molto speciale che sfortunatamente non si accorge di te.

L'aspetto economico rappresenta sempre un ostacolo per chi come voi ha incominciato ad incidere in studio, oppure esistono strategie di realizzazione di un prodotto più economiche ma altrettanto valide?

-|-|-» In Vein: La parte finanziaria è sempre un problema se si vuole avere successo, ma anche in questo caso riteniamo che se sogni e lavori abbastanza sodo nulla è impossibile.
Ci sono buoni album creati con limitate attrezzature e denaro. Devi solo fare il meglio con ciò che possiedi e questo è ciò che stiamo cercando di fare.
Il più grande ostacolo è la promozione e la distribuzione.

Quanto dovremo aspettare per il prossimo vostro full lenght ?

-|-|-» In Vein: Stiamo costantemente producendo musica ed abbiamo già pronte alcune tracce ma non abbiamo ancora fissato una data per l'uscita.

Esaminando il vostro storico, noto con piacere che avete supportato molti artisti famosi: Dyco & Wolfang Flur (Kraftwerk) nel 2007, i Pride and Fall nel 2006, i Cue to Recall nel 2005 e molti altri. Inoltre collaborate con alcune bands con il vostro lavoro di arrangiamento. Ci volete parlare meglio di queste vostre attitudini? Lavorare così strettamente con questi diversi influenti progetti modifica molto il vostro personale stile creativo?

-|-|-» In Vein: Non dimenticare inoltre Front242 e Nitzer Ebb! Tutti questi artisti hanno avuto una certa influenza nella nostra musica, in un modo o nell'altro. Soprattutto riguardo l'energia mostrataci e la loro esperienza che abbiamo sperimentato così da vicino. Ma, come accennato prima, ci piace mantenere la melodia al centro della nostra musica quindi si trovano ispirazioni ed influenze ovunque!

Come giudicate il panorama musicale norvegese? C'è spazio e apprezzamento per le electro-bands oppure esiste un particolare genere che domina su tutti gli altri?

-|-|-» In Vein: La scena musicale norvegese è dominata prevalentemente dalla musica rock. Per fortuna abbiamo anche alcune electro-bands come ad esempio Royksopp, Apoptygma Berzerk, Combichrist ed altri che contribuiscono alla electro scene. Ma purtroppo loro stessi e la loro musica sono più conosciuti al di fuori della Norvegia.

Avete incominciato a creare musica con la sola intenzione di divertirvi o anche di crescere professionalmente nel suo ambito?

-|-|-» In Vein: Finora abbiamo creato musica per divertimento, sia per noi che per le persone che ci ascoltano.

Quanto siete maturati musicalmente dal 2002 ad oggi?

-|-|-» In Vein: Mai abbastanza...

Quali strumentazioni avete cambiato in questi anni? Oggi i synths e le tastiere sono molto più potenti e sofisticate che un tempo.
Ricordate una vecchia tastiera particolarmente valida? Parlando invece di nuove tecnologie, esiste oggi sul mercato uno strumento hardware che vorreste suonare più di ogni altro?

-|-|-» In Vein: Abbiamo accesso ad un mucchio di sintetizzatori, vecchi e nuovi, ma sembriamo preferire il buon vecchio materiale. "Strangled Voices" è principalmente composto con il synths anni '70-'80's ma combinati a quelli nuovi. È possibile ascoltare i Juno strings ed il SH101 oppure i bassi del MS10, se si ascolta con attenzione; ma troviamo anche l'uso della virus. Con i moderni synths è una gioia adoperare tutti quelli effetti, ma quando si avvia il processo di mixing spesso le tracce risultano con un suono più spoglio che in origine. Molti dei nostri brani hanno iniziato con una Roland JD800 o l'SH101.

Nel Gennaio 2008, quando avete presentato "Strangled Voices" ad un release-party, come ha reagito il pubblico?

-|-|-» In Vein: Quel party è stato un enorme successo! Per ironia della sorte si è svolto in un luogo chiamato "Cafe Fiasco", ma era affollato da un sacco di persone felici.

Avete anche partecipato al cd compilation "Serial Killer Electronics" per la Tatra Records con la song "Amended". Nel cd appaiono molti grandi artisti come Icon of Coil, Conetik, Sweep, X-Machina... Quali mezzi utilizzano queste bands, secondo voi, per essersi affermate nel mercato discografico? E' sufficiente il solo e puro talento oppure bisogna neccessariamente conoscere le persone giuste per entrare nei circuiti di vendita?

-|-|-» In Vein: Crediamo che il talento porti lontano, ma non sempre basta. Conoscere le persone giuste o imparare a conoscere le persone influenti è altrettanto importante.
Devi fare in modo che la gente giusta ascolti la tua musica ed essere tu in grado di proporla in seguito alle grandi masse.

Christer, Tom, Jarle, fateci una vostra personale classifica Top 5 degli albums di tutti i tempi a cui non potreste mai rinunciare. Chi incomincia...?

Welcome In Vein, Norwegian electro band composed by Christer Eriksen (vocals), Tom Kalstad (synth), Jarle Hansen (synth). Are we of Dside webzine the firsts Italians who have interviewed you?

-|-|-» In Vein: Hello Dside! Yes, you are the first Italians who have interviewed us. Earlier we have been interviewed by the press in Norway, Sweden, Germany and US. Congrats!

You are an emerging band into a very vast musical landscape. How are you going to stand out from the rest of the countless bands that populate this scene?

-|-|-» In Vein: Well, it is hard to stand out from all the good bands. What we think we have captured is that we always try to seek out a good melody to build the song around.
Secondly we are not trying to hit a fashion, but making the music we like to listen to our self.

Before you tell us how was born your current project I would like to know some details about your collaboration with the Skin Disease (Christer and Tom), Gothminister (Tom) and with various projects (Jarle) ... What do you tell about these past experiences?

-|-|-» In Vein: Both Christer and Tom was a part of Skin Disease, Christer singing of course. Skin Disease was an electro industrial band and lived for 2 year. The band did some gigs and a support for Icon of Coil and was signed by Zoth Ommog. Unfortunately the label went out of business before an album was made. Tom is still a part of Gothminister (www.myspace.com/gothminister) and Jarle is working on a new project named Substate (www.myspace.com/substatemusic). Gothminister is well established, but Substate is doing the first gig in May 2009.

Can you describe us how and why you created "In Vein". What is the nucleus which gives energy to your music and why this name?...Perhaps that which occurring inside your veins is electronic spirit and soul ?

-|-|-» In Vein: When Skin Disease came to an end, Christer and Tom wanted to continue making music. And while sharing a beer at the annual electronic Christmas celebration the idea about In Vein was born. The name In Vein was chosen because we have grown up with electronic music, and as you say we got it in our spirit and soul. We also want you to carry our music in your veins.

Are your ideas born and develop in the studio, or they grow in parallel with experiences of your life outside the walls of your sound lab?

-|-|-» In Vein: Good question actually. Most of our music ideas are born outside of the studio, when at places not possible to record the idea. I mean, while on the way back from a night in the city, while driving and so on. But of course, playing around in the studio is also a good way to get new ideas.

What gives nowadays the European electronic scene? Do you think it's genre that is setting out, or you find in it a special spirit of survival and innovation?

-|-|-» In Vein: Our impression is that the Electric scene is constantly changing, all the way from synth pop, tekno to industry. Then again, a good melody will always be appreciated.
These days a lot of international artists and bands are "stealing" elements or using the sound of the electronic scene (Madonna, Britney Spears, The Killers etc).
So... The short version of our answer is; Yes, we believe the European electronic scene will continue to evolve and be innovative.

"Strangled Voices" is your debut album with irresistible melodies and vibrant rhythms. Which impression you had from this first recording experience? Which elements would you correct in this album, if there is anything that has not you fully convinced?

-|-|-» In Vein: When we made "Strangled Voices" we had limited time and budget, so of course we could spend a lot more time with the details. But, if you spend too much time making an album, it can be too much also. What was really a pain when recording the album was that Christer had a bad cold most of the time. That gave us limited time to work on his vocals. But we think we managed well in the end!

The album was produced by Alex Jarlew. Speak us about him and how this collaboration started..

-|-|-» In Vein: Alex Jarlev is a good friend of us, and is also the not-singing-half of the Norwegian band Panzerveps. Besides Panzerveps he has done some great remixes for x:machina, Conetik, Code 64 and Gothminister! We have always admired his work and when he found an opening on producing our album, we were delighted!

"Invitation" is a very interesting track, danceable and melodic. What is in practice its real meaning?

-|-|-» In Vein: It is a song about longing for that special someone, who unfortunately, couldn't care less about you.

The high costs are always an obstacle for people like you who started to have a studio experience. Are there some strategies more economical but equally valid to reach goals of success?

-|-|-» In Vein: Financials is always an issue if you want to be successful, but again we believe if you dream and work hard enough, nothing is impossible. There are good albums created with limited equipment and money. You just have to do the best with what you got, and that is what we are trying to do also. The biggest obstacle is promotion and distribution.

How much time we will have to wait for your next full length?

-|-|-» In Vein: We are constantly making music and already having some nice songs ready, but no date has been set yet.

Examining your history, I note with pleasure that you have supported many famous artists: Dyco & Wolfgang Flur (Kraftwerk) in 2007, Pride and Fall in 2006, Cue to Recall in 2005, and many others. You also collaborate with some bands with your work of arrangement. Would you like to speak about these attitudes? Do you think that working so closely with these various influential projects they may change your personal creative style?

-|-|-» In Vein: Not to forget Front242 and Nitzer Ebb! All of these artists have had an influence to our music one way or another. Mostly because of the energy it gives us to see and experience them that close. But as mentioned before, we like to keep the melody in center of our music, therefore we find inspiration and influences everywhere!

How do you judge the Norwegian music scene? There are opportunities for appreciation about the electro-bands or there is a particular genre that dominates above all others?

-|-|-» In Vein: The Norwegian music scene is dominated by rock music. Fortunately, we have some electro-bands also, like for instance Röyksopp, Apoptygma Berzerk, Combichrist and others contributing to the electro scene.But their music is unfortunately better known outside of Norway.

Have you decided to start to create music with the only intention to entertain or even to grow professionally in this area?

-|-|-» In Vein: So far we create music for the entertainment, both for us and the people listening to our music.

How much are you earned musically since 2002?

-|-|-» In Vein: Not nearly enough...

Which instruments have you changed over the years? Today, synths and keyboards are much powerful and sophisticated than a past time.
Do you remember an old keyboard particularly good? Speaking instead of new technologies on the actual market, there is a hardware model instrument that you would like to play more than any other?

-|-|-» In Vein: We have access to a lot of synths, both new and old, but we seem to prefer the good old stuff. "Strangled Voices" is mainly made on synths from 70-ties and 80-ties, but also combined with new ones. You can hear the Juno strings and the SH101 or MS10 basses if you listen carefully, but we also find use of the Virus. Modern synths can be a joy to play around with all of its effects and so on,but when we start the mixing process, we often end up with a stripped sound. A lot of our songs have started out on a Roland JD800 or the SH101.

How has the public reacted In January 2008, when you presented "Voices strangled" with a release-party?

-|-|-» In Vein: The release-party was a huge success! Ironically it was held at a place called "Cafe Fiasco", but it was crowded by happy people.

You have also participated in the cd compilation cd "Serial Killer Electronics" for the Tatra Records with the song "Amended". In this appear in many great artists as Icon of Coil, Conetik, Sweep, X-Machina ...Which strategies used these bands for establish them in the high music market? Is the pure talent enough, or should they need to know the "right people" to enter into the sale channels ?

-|-|-» In Vein: We believe talent brings you far, but not the whole way. Knowing the right people or learning to know the right people and not giving up is also very important. You got to let the right people hear you music so you will be able to get the music out to the crowd.
