E' con onore che presentiamo ai lettori di Dside un ospite illustre: Pieter Nooten, ex membro dei Clan of Xymox ed ora stimato compositore dark ambient.
Benvenuto Pieter è bello averti quì! La tua sporadica presenza sulle scene è intenzionale? Sembrerebbe che tu preferisca uscirne e rientrare dopo molto tempo. Cos'hai fatto in tutti questi anni?

-|-|-» Pieter: E' un piacere! Mi sono dedicato ad altre cose, prendendo una pausa dal music business. Era giunto il momento di fare qualcosa di diverso. Così ho scritto e prodotto musica, ma è stato fatto tutto indirettamente, dietro le quinte, per così dire.

Sei famoso per essere stato il tastierista dei primi Clan of Xymox, per cui è naturale chiederti qualche domanda in proposito: per quanto ottimo musicista del clan non hai avuto molta visibilità, in un primo tempo. Forse perchè la figura di Ronny Moorings era quella predominante? Come giudichi le successive evoluzioni degli Xymox fino ad oggi?

-|-|-» Pieter: Sono assolutamente d'accordo. Ho scritto la maggior parte delle canzoni per il debut album ed un bel pò di esse per il secondo.. ma non mi sono mai sentito riconosciuto. Il nostro cantante aveva catalizzato tutta l'attenzione finchè il resto della band finì in una sorta di background. Dapprima non ci ho fatto molto caso ma poi ho deciso di non averci più nulla a che fare.

Anche se ora la domanda che chiedo potrà apparirti obsoleta: perchè hai lasciato il Clan? Quello citato è stato l'unico motivo?

-|-|-» Pieter: La mia musica è andata evolvendosi in una direzione completamente nuova e diversa. Ho voluto più sperimentazione ed electro, il cantante dei C.O.X. ha voluto invece mantenere il suo status quo, molto più lento ed in ambito prettamente gotico.

Se ti fosse proposto, faresti parte ancora dell'attuale line up degli Xymox? Hai ancora contatti con Ronny?

-|-|-» Pieter: Io? Mai! Preferirei costruire una band con KOSMO, il cane della porta accanto! Canta molto meglio...

Il tuo primo album "Sleeps with the Fishes" con Michael Brook ha segnato un percorso dark ambient molto particolare e sono sicuro che è stato di ispirazione anche per altri successivi artisti. Come hai concepito quel suono? Che strumentazioni hai utilizzato all'epoca?

-|-|-» Pieter: Vado ancora fiero di quel lavoro e che rimane ancora rilevante ed autentico. Io e Michael volevamo suonare qualcosa di molto speciale e questo è ciò che abbiamo fatto. Abbiamo usato i suoni della Dx7 di Brian Eno ed un po' di libera sperimentazione combinando anche strumenti acustici. Abbiamo pensato alla musica ambient ed mettendoci l'anima. Guarda: la maggior parte dell'ambient è ancora molto preimpostata. In quella fase abbiamo quindi composto accordi più estesi unitamente alle strutture sequenziali di una piccola campana nel background.

Personalmente sono ancora oggi semplicemente incantato da una bellissima song contenuta in "Sleeps...": Several Times". I suoi lunghissimi percorsi di tastiera sono a dir poco incantevoli. Sono contento di ritrovarla nella track-list del nuovo cd "Collected". Parlaci meglio di questa intensa, intramontabile traccia strumentale.

-|-|-» Pieter: Piace molto anche a me! Ha degli accordi semplicemente meravigliosi e lente, mesmerizzanti modulazioni. Si avvicina molto a ciò che volevamo realmente proporre.

"Cyberia", un altro trascorso Nooten's project. Di cosa si è trattato?

-|-|-» Pieter: E' stato un esempio del lavoro di produzione che ho realizzato all'inizio degli anni 90's. Si trattava un progetto dance. Ho usato uno pseudonimo in modo che nessuno lo trovi mai!

Hai prodotto inoltre "Two Ways of Running" di Sophie Zehl..

-|-|-» Pieter: Soltanto in una percentuale. Ho solo fornito alcuni samples, qualche suggerimento sui beats e sulle atmosfere. Anka ha prodotto la maggior parte dell'album. Un lavoro meraviglioso. Sto provando a coinvolgerla sempre più anche con il mio operato, ma lei ha per il momento altri interessi.

Per chi non conosce "Ourspace", il tuo album del 2006, come lo descriveresti? Quali sono le principali differenze che lo separano da "Sleeps..

-|-|-» Pieter: Bene: in primo luogo non è un album completamente prodotto. "Ourspace" contiene dei demo che avrei gradito remixare per esempio con Michael ma a quel tempo era troppo impegnato. "Ourspace" è un album fragile, modestamente prodotto, con poche pretese. Ho pensato solo che sarebbe stato bello pubblicarlo. Ora sto andando avanti scrivendo molto buon materiale. Eppure, spero che il mio stile sia ancora improntato come su "Ourspace".

Ho letto che non ti piace la tua voce...io invece la trovo interessante e ben modulata. E' vero che Anka Wolbert ha insistito affinchè tu cantassi in quell'album?

-|-|-» Pieter: E' vero! Sto prendendo lezioni di canto. Voglio fare dei live shows ad un certo punto!

Tu e Anka Wolbert avete quindi ristabilito un contatto. Tutti e due avete militato nei C.o.X.; Anka ha inciso "Cocoon Time" per la label I-Rain: hai collaborato anche tu alla stesura di questo album? Avete entrambi la stessa impronta musicale?

-|-|-» Pieter: Anka ed io abbiamo prodotto "Cocoon Time" a Londra alcuni anni fa. Non è mai stato pubblicato quindi lo consideriamo fatto esclusivamente per noi.

"Collected", il nuovo album di cui parleremo tra poco, è stato distribuito dalla Twilight Records. Perchè non dalla I-Rain?

-|-|-» Pieter: Perchè la Twilight Records ha voluto pubblicare una sorta di compilation "best of" con brani provenienti da diverse realizzazioni, in particolare per il mercato Sud Americano.

"Collected", infatti, non mi sembra solo un semplice "best of"... appare piuttosto come la collezione delle emozioni appartenenti a tutta una vita. Sei d'accordo con me, Pieter?

-|-|-» Pieter: Quasi. Ho comunque proceduto ulteriormente ed ho pronti ancora una ventina di nuovi brani che sto faticando a pubblicare..

Attualmente quali strumenti utilizzi per comporre le tue musiche?

-|-|-» Pieter: Suono tutti gli strumenti, cioè: Compongo sul book del Mackintosh-pro, usando Logic Audio Studio con parecchi plugs installati.

E' possibile che nei tuoi disegni futuri ci sia spazio anche per la tua presenza in una band, oppure pensi di continuare la tua carriera sempre come solo-project?

-|-|-» Pieter: Credo di fare ora ciò che mi riesce meglio. Non funzionerei bene in una band.

Hai mai composto musiche per films o per teatro? Il tuo suono si adatterebbe perfettamente a questi ambiti..

-|-|-» Pieter: Grazie! Sì, comporre progetti per l'arte, video, media... mi piacerebbe lavorare per i film, ma mi sembra un mondo molto difficile da raggiungere.

-|-|-» Pieter: La musica deve mirare sempre ad emozionare, correre verso il cuore e la mente, non al cervello. With honour we present to the Dside's readers an illustrious guest: Pieter Nooten, a former member of the back Clan of Xymox's line up and now estimated dark ambient composer. Welcome Pieter. It's great have you here with us! Is your sporadic presence on the scene intentional? It seems that you prefer to leave and return after a long time. What have you done during all these years?

-|-|-» Pieter: It is a pleasure. I have been doing other things, taking a break from the music business. It was time to do something different. Even so, I have been writing and producing music, but it was more low key, behind the curtains so to say.

You are famous for being the keyboardist of the early Clan of Xymox, so it is natural ask you any questions about this event: as good musician of the Clan you have not had much visibility, initially. Was it so because the figure of Ronny Moorings was predominant? How you judge the subsequent evolutions of the Xymox?

-|-|-» Pieter: Absolutely. Mind you, I wrote most of the songs for the debut album and quite a few for the 2nd. But I have never felt acknowledged. Our lead singer craved so much attention, the rest of the band sort of pined away in the background. I did not really mind then, but later I found I did not have to put up with it anymore.

Although the question that I ask you now may seem obsolete...: why you left the Clan? That reason you've just said was really the only matter?

-|-|-» Pieter: My music was evolving in a completely new direction. I wanted more experimentation and electronica, the lead singer wanted to maintain the status quo, slowly moving more and more into gothic territory.

If they suggest you it, would you still enter to the actual Xymox's line up? Are you still in contact with Ronny?

-|-|-» Pieter: Never! I?d rather start a band with Kosmo the friendly dog next door! She sings better too!

Your first solo album "Sleeps with the Fishes" with Michael Brook was a very special dark ambient work and I am sure that was the inspiration for other later artists. How did you conceived that sound? What kind of equipment you used?

-|-|-» Pieter: I am still proud of that work and it still sounds relevant and authentic. Michael and I just wanted to put out something very special and that is what we did. We used Brian Eno's dx7 sounds quite a bit and experimented freely, combining this with acoustic instruments. We thought ambient music was just to clinical and we wanted to put more soul into it. Mind you, most ambient is still very preset driven. We wanted more then just extended chord structures with tiny bell sequences in the background.

Personally, I am still simply enchanted by a beautiful song included in "Sleeps ...": "Several Times". Its long keyboard paths are so charming. I am glad to find this song into the track-list of your new cd called "Collected." Speak us better about this intense, everlasting, instrumental track.What can I say.

-|-|-» Pieter: I love it too! It-s just wonderful chords and lazy, mesmerising modulations. It comes close to the feel we wanted to get across.

"Cyberia", another past Nooten's project. What was it?

-|-|-» Pieter: This is an example of the production work I did a lot in the early 90-s. It was a dance music project. I used a pseudonym so nobody ever will find it back!

You also produced "Two Ways of Running" by Sophie Zehl ..

-|-|-» Pieter: Only for a percentage. I came up with some samples, beat suggestions and moods. Anka produced most of it. A wonderful job. I am still trying to get her more involved, also with my own material, but she has other interests nowadays.

For those who don't know "Ourspace,", your album of 2006, how can you describe it? Which are the main differences that separate it from "Sleeps ..."?

-|-|-» Pieter: Well, first of all it is NOT a thoroughly produced album. "Ourspace" contains of demo-s. I would have loved to remix them with for example Michael, but he was just to busy to get involved. "Ourspace" is a fragile and modestly produced album with not much pretention. I just thought it would be nice to put it out. I am moving on and writing much better material now. Still, I hope my style is still preserved on "Ourspace".

I read that you don't like your voice ... I find it rather interesting and well-modulated. Was it true that Anka Wolbert has insisted you sing in that album?

-|-|-» Pieter: That is true. I am taking singing lessons. I want to do live shows at some point!

Anka Wolbert and you renewed the contacts. You were both C.o.X. members; Anka has recorded "Cocoon Time" for the label I-Rain. Have you worked to this album too? Have you both the same music views?

-|-|-» Pieter: Anka and I produced "Cocoon time" in London a few years ago. It was never put out so we did it ourselves.

"Collected", your new album, which we will talk about then, was distributed by the label Twilight Records. Why not from I-Rain?

-|-|-» Pieter: Twilight Records wanted to put out a sort of best of compilation with tracks taken from different releases, especially for the South American market.

"Collected" sounds not only as a simple Best of ... it get rather as a collection of emotions belonging to a whole life. Are you agree with me, Pieter?

-|-|-» Pieter: Almost. But I have moved on and have twenty or so new tracks ready I am dying to put out!

Actually, which instrumentations you play to compose your music?

-|-|-» Pieter: I play all instruments, meaning: I compose on the Mac book pro, using logic audio studio with quite a few plug ins installed.

Does it possible that in your future designs you'll be part in one band, or you think to continue your career ever as a single-project?

-|-|-» Pieter: I think I will keep doing what I do best. I do not function well in a band.

Have you ever composed music for films or theatre? Your sound fits perfectly in these areas ..

-|-|-» Pieter: Thank you. Yes I do compose for art projects, video, media and film etc. I would love to compose for movies but it seems a very difficult world to get in to.
