SADMAN

Un saluto a questo nuovo electro dhuo svedese: Mattias e Lars, in arte Sadman. Grazie per essere quì con i lettori di Dside. Non si sa molto della vostra biografia. Da quale cultura musicale provenite? Parlateci un pò di voi ed in che modo è nata l'idea di progettarvi come Sadman.

-|-|-» Sadman: Certamente, è bello!Siamo cresciuti in una piccola città della Svezia ascoltando bands come Depeche Mode e altri gruppi synth. Abbiamo cominciato suonare con le tastiere dei miei fratelli maggiori e abbiamo trovato molto semplice creare delle canzoni assieme. Per molto tempo abbiamo odiato le chitarre, ma quando è arrivato il fenomeno grunge abbiamo amato subito Nirvana e Smashing Pumpkins e poi Blur e Radiohead ... sì, siamo stati davvero grandi fans dei Blur e abbiamo icreato una Indie band che ha realizzato alcune canzoni per una piccola label.
Poi io (Lasse) ho iniziato la scuola e Mattias i suoi stidi di insegnante, così abbiamo smesso di suonare per alcuni anni; poi una notte, verso la fine del 2006, Mattias mi inviò una canzone in cui ho aggiunto alcuni miei dettagli. Ne uscì un grande brano e quindi abbiamo deciso di avviare il progetto Sadman.

Chi sono le vostre Muse ispiratrici? Quali artisti hanno influenzato e potenziato la vostra inclinazione verso la "tristezza" ?

-|-|-» Sadman: Depeche mode, Recoil, Radiohead, Blur e, naturalmente, la nostra vita.

La vostra musica è un mix di vocals malinconici, synths e chitarre ed è stata subito giudicata positivamente dalle critiche. Ve lo aspettavate?

-|-|-» Sadman: Non abbiamo considerato ciò che gli altri avrebbero eventualmente pensato. Volevamo solo fare un buon album di cui essere fieri... tuttavia ci sono alcune piccole cose che oggi avremmo potuto fare diversamente.

Oltre a quel senso malincoSadman riesco ad avvertire nel vostro stile molto sentimento. Come fate ad associare le fredde logiche dell'elettronica ad un elemento così "umano"?

-|-|-» Sadman: E'solo il nostro modo di lavorare. Molti suoni nell'album sono effettivamente chitarre unitamente a molti effetti electro.

..e a proposito di "freddezza", cosa intendete esattamente per "Cold in the state of me"?

-|-|-» Sadman: È solo un'immagine. Quasi tutte le nostre liriche sono generate dalle immagini all'interno delle nostre menti. Ma esse finiranno tutte con l'adattarsi a chi le sta ascoltando. Alcuni diranno che è un'ispirazione all'Amleto di Shakespeare oppure qualcosa di marcio nella condizione della Danimarca...ma è molto meglio immaginare tutto quanto. Comunque questo è il titolo della prima canzone dell'album e noi pensiamo che sia una grande espressione che ben introduce tutte le altre tracce contenute in esso.

Quali potenzialità artistiche ritenete di possedere? Le usate tutte al meglio?

-|-|-» Sadman: Abbiamo entrambi un grande potenziale artistico e insieme abbiamo davvero voluto darci vicendevolmente un impulso per eseguire l'album nel modo migliore. Sarebbe stato eccitante ricorrere ad un synth-produttore per il nostro lavoro e vedere come sarebbe stato il risultato finale.

Appartenere ad un genere musicale underground costituisce una limitazione oppure presenta dei risvolti positivi?

-|-|-» Sadman: Non abbiamo mai pensato ad un genere specifico quando creiamo musica. Ma ci si sente un po' "esclusivi" appartenendo ad essa. Penso che l'ascoltatore underground sia il più attento e fedele. E questo è esattamente ciò che si desidera quando si impiegano così tanto tempo e sforzi nella creazione di brani che provengono dall'anima.

Essere pubblicati da una label come la Memento Materia è un grande onore, essendo essa una delle più attive e selettive. Cosa ne pensate? Avete avuto altre proposte di contratto prima della MM?

-|-|-» Sadman: Avevamo appena iniziato come Sadman e realizzato qualche pezzo, quando abbiamo chiesto loro se accettavano il nostro progetto. Hanno risposto di sì e ci siamo concentrati subito sulla creazione della musica, invece di continuare a cercare altre labels. MM è una grande etichetta ed è questo ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno in questi primi periodi in veste di Sadman.

In ogni genere musicale esiste il rischio di creare songs praticamente identiche ad altre, melodie banali,ripetitività stilistica. Come deve agire un artista per evitare ciò e creare un proprio segmento musicale che sia considerato originale?

-|-|-» Sadman: Penso che sia importante non focalizzarsi su un genere specifico. Se lo si fa solo per sè stessi si è più sicuri. Se poi si vuol tentare di colpire nel mezzo di uno specifico genere, si è molto più a rischio di plagio.

Ritornando all'album, esso quindi riflette molte cose del vostro stato d'animo e del corso dei vostri pensieri. Come riassumereste allora il concetto di "gioia"?

-|-|-» Sadman: Se ci riuscissimo non avremmo fatto questo album. D'altra parte, realizzarlo è stata proprio la sintesi di una grande "gioia"

Il video omonimo è davvero minimalista ma originale. Mi è piaciuto! Cosa avete voluto comunicare esattamente con quelle vostre immagini così immobili?

-|-|-» Sadman: Il video è un pezzo d'arte. Illustra una performance, un atto, prima, ed in seguito le conseguenze. Come il resto del pubblico, hai potuto vedere il tutto esclusivamente dall'esterno, invece di ciò che stava accadendo all'interno delle scene...

Il singolo "Help" è un ottimo brano ed un dancefloor di effetto. Come mai la scelta di proporlo esclusivamentein veste digital?

-|-|-» Sadman: Questo, amico mio,dovresti chiederlo la nostra label! Noi non abbiamo una risposta riguardo ciò. Riteniamo che sia importante che l'ascoltatore la memorizzi nella sua mente.

So che inoltre siete stati paragonati ai Depeche Mode del periodo di "Ultra". Siete d'accordo con questa definizione?

-|-|-» Sadman: Wow ...non ci ho mai pensato ! Credo piuttosto che potremmo essere definiti una via di mezzo tra gli albums "SOFAD", "Ultra" ed alcuni interventi tratti da "Exciter".

Vi piacerebbe produrre un album di una band?

-|-|-» Sadman: Sì, ci piacerebbe! ... Finché ameremo l'anima della musica..

Come vedete il futuro dell'electro in Svezia e, più generalmente in Europa?

-|-|-» Sadman: Ci auguriamo che cresca! Auspichiamo inoltre che i Depeche Mode facciano un grande album e noi, piccole realtà, possiamo "nuotare" tra le loro ondate di successo.

Chi vi supporta durante i live shows?...Oppure preferite suonare esclusivamente da soli?

-|-|-» Sadman: Se opteremo per un tour europeo vedremo chi sarà il supporter. Non abbiamo ancora deciso nulla in merito.

Avete mai suonato in un club dove il pubblico si è dimostrato annoiato?

-|-|-» Sadman: Non da quando ci siamo proposti come Sadman!

Greetings to this new Swedish electro duo: Mattias and Lars, in art Sadman. Thanks for being here with the Dside's readers! We don' know much about your biography. From what musical culture do you come from? Speak us about you and how you have had the idea of the Sadman's project.

-|-|-» Sadman: Hi! We love being here! We grow up in a small town in Sweden and fell in love with the same bands like Depeche Mode and other synth-bands. We started to play on my older brothers keyboards and we found it very easy to create songs together.For very long time we hated guitars but when the grunge era came we loved Nirvana and Smashing pumpkins and then came BLUR and Radiohead…yes we are really great Blur fans and we started a Indie band that released some songs on a small indie company.
Then I (Lasse) started acting school and Mattias started his teacher studies and we stopped playing together for some years but then one night late 2006 Mattias send me a song and I took it and put my things into it and it was a great song then we decided to start Sadman.

Who are your inspiring Muses? What artists have influenced and enhanced your inclination towards the "sadness"?

-|-|-» Sadman: DDepeche mode, Recoil, Radiohead and Blur and off course life itself.

Your music is a mix of melancholy vocals, synths and guitars and was immediately and positively judged by the critics. Did you expect a similar reaction?

-|-|-» Sadman: We didn’t think about what others would think when we created it we just wanted to make a good album that we could be proud of and we are….well there are small things that we might would have done different today.

In addition to that sense of melancholy I can feel in your style many sentiment. How can you associate the cold logic of electronics to an element so "human"?

-|-|-» Sadman: It’s just the way we work, and many sounds on the album is actually guitars with many electronic effects on.

..and speaking of the "cold", exactly what you mean for "Cold in the state of me"?

-|-|-» Sadman: It’s a picture. Almost all of our lyrics are created by pictures inside our minds. But that picture will end up different depending on who is listening. Some will say that it is a hint to Shakespeare and Hamlets firs line -It’s something rotten in the state of Denmark. Any how... when it is dark in all directions - you better dreaming on...- It’s the title of the first song on the album and we think it is a great expression for a summary of all songs in the album.

Which artistic potential do you think to have inside your own? Are you sure you use it at its best?

-|-|-» Sadman: We are both of great artistic potential and together we really boost each other to perform the best. Though it would be exiting letting an experienced synth-producer to produce one of our album and see how it will effect the outcome.

Belong to an undergrounded music genre, is this a limitation or it has some positive implications?

-|-|-» Sadman: We never think about the genre when creating the music. But it feels a bit exclusive belonging to it. I think the underground listener are more careful and faithful. And that is exactly what you want when you putting so much time and efforts in creating tunes from your inner soul.

Who needs your music? What sensitive souls do you hope to reach?

-|-|-» Sadman: Everyone who gets great pictures and feelings of the tunes and/or the lyrics. Almost all souls are feeling alienated in some way and I think
our music can help people feed their souls with tunes and lyrics just to feel better.

To be published by a label like Memento Materia is a great honor: it is one of the most active and selective labels. What do you think about? Have you had other proposals for the contract before the MM?

-|-|-» Sadman: We had just started Sadman and made a couple of songs when we ask them. They said yes and we focused on creating music instead of hunting others. MM are a great label and just what we need in this early days of Sadman.

In every music genre, there is a risk of creating songs virtually identical to other, banal melodies, repetitive style. What can do an artist to prevent it and create their own music segment more original?

-|-|-» Sadman: I think it’s important to work not so focused on a specific genre. If you are doing what you want to do for yourself you are more safe. The moment you try to hit the middle of a genre, then you are in a great risk of plagiarism.

Returning to the album, it reflects a lot of your state of mind and of course your thoughts. How can you summarize the concept of "joy"?

-|-|-» Sadman: If we could we would not have done this album. In the other hand, to do this album has been just a summarize of a BIG "JOY"

The homonymous video is really minimalist but very original. I like it! What you wanted to communicate with those images?

-|-|-» Sadman: The video is a piece of art. Its illustrating a performance, an act - before, in action, and the aftermath. As the audience you are unfortunately just able to see it from the outside - while everything is happening inside. If it was a great performance in there? - off course not ..

The single "Help" is a great song, it could be a great dance floor. Why the choice of having proposed item only in a digital version?

-|-|-» Sadman: That my friend, you have to ask our company! We will not answer on the lyrics. We think it’s important that the listener makes his own paint in head

I also know that you have been compared to Depeche Mode of the "Ultra"'s age . Are you agree with this definition?

-|-|-» Sadman: Wow…I have never thought about that…. I think it’s in the middle of SOFAD album and Ultra yes but also some stuff of exciter as well.

Would you like to produce an album for a band?

-|-|-» Sadman: Yes we would love to produce another band… As long as we like the soul of the music.

How you can see the future about the electro scene in Sweden and, more generally, in Europe?

-|-|-» Sadman: We realy hope it will grow! And lets pray that Depeche mode make a great album, then we smaller acts can swim in their waves of success

Who support you musically during live shows? ... Or do you prefer to play only themselves?

-|-|-» Sadman: If we go on European tour we will see who supporting us…nothing decided yet.

Have you ever played in a club where the public has shown bored?

-|-|-» Sadman: Not with the Sadman project YET !
