Nico, alias Midnight Resistance. Benvenuto su Dside! Nel tuo progetto sei il songwriter, chitarrista, autore delle liriche e produttore. E' difficile gestire tutti questi aspetti individualmente?

-|-|-» Nico: E' un piacere. Nient'affatto: si tratta di un processo biologico per me, quello di occupare tutti questi diversi ruoli. Mi da il controllo completo sulla mia musica e mi piace questo modo di lavorare, soprattutto quando scrivo le canzoni. Questo è il motivo principale, il motivo per cui ho iniziato il mio progetto solista. Ok, a volte si desidererebbe mantenere più "distanza" dalle canzoni, soprattutto quando si tratta della produzione e del mixaggio delle tracce, ma penso che funzioni bene anche così. Ho ottenuto solo reazioni positive riguardo l'album.

cosa ti ha insegnato professionalmente Il tuo passato in qualità di membro dei ReActivate?

-|-|-» Nico: Sono stato coinvolto in molti progetti e bands dapprima, poi ho lavorato in una studio-company, scrivendo e producendo canzoni per Pop / Rock e Dance-music suonando inoltre in altre Electro-/Synthpop-Bands, che frequentavano il mio studio di registrazione, ecc. Quindi tutta la mia carriera musicale finora mi ha insegnato professionalità, il lavoro svolto con i ReActivate è solo una piccola parte dei essa.

Qual'è stato l'input che ti ha fatto decidere la separazione dalla band?

-|-|-» Nico: Diciamo che abbiamo avuto opinioni diverse, concernenti la musica, l'ulteriore direzione della band ed il suono. Mi sentivo infelice in quella band. Ma il passato è passato, Midnight Resistance è ora il futuro. E, come ho menzionato sopra, ho sempre voluto realizzare un album completamente mio ... e volevo esserne anche il cantante!

Quale ruolo occupavi all'interno dei ReActivate?

-|-|-» Nico: Ero tastierista, soundprogrammer e compositore.

Oggi la tua musica tocca varie sponde. Essa va dall'electro alla dance athmospheric con varie esposizioni chitarristiche...hai sempre coltivato intimamente questa inclinazione oppure l'hai maturata nel corso di questi ultimi periodi?

-|-|-» Nico: Sono influenzato da molti stili musicali, mi piacciono le chitarre tanto quanto sintetizzatori. Penso che questa direzione sia quella adatta a me. Amo unire stili diversi, creare il mio soundscape. Ok, so che oggi è impossibile creare qualcosa di innovativo, credo tuttavia che l'ecletticismo non sia affatto un male. È la somma di tutte le mie esperienze, le influenze e le mie personali introspettive visioni musicali: in questo modo mi sembra di aver creato qualcosa di nuovo.

Le tue influenze artistiche derivano dagli anni 70-80-90's unitamente a tutto ciò che proviene dal "nuovo millennio". Non mancano tuttavia riferimenti specifici a classiche bands storiche come i Depeche Mode e i Camouflage. Ciò conferma che specialmente i DM hanno marchiato a fuoco la storia del panorama elettronico...Cosa ne pensi?

-|-|-» Nico: Ho molto rispetto per i DM, della loro musica e della loro carriera. Ed amo ovviamente il loro stile, ma ciò non ha premuto il "grilletto" per cominciare a fare musica (elettronica). Sono principalmente influenzato dal post-punk & (New) Wave-bands e dal primo movimento Synth / Elettronic.

A proposito...So che "Midnight Resistance" è anche il nome di un videogame arcade del 1989. Esiste qualche similitudine?

-|-|-» Nico: Hm, beh, ho iniziato a fare remix sotto questo pseudonimo semplicemente perché mi piaceva il suo suono. Poi ho realizzato le mie tracce sotto questo nome e qualche mese più tardi ho ricevuto un contratto, così l'ho mantenuto. Sono sempre stato un fan delle soundtracks del C64 / Chiptunes e videogiochi in genere, così c'è effettivamente qualche legame col passato ed al nome di quel gioco.

Hai anche contribuito a molte compilations. In base al tuo giudizio, in che modo i samplers possono rivelarsi utili? Come riescono a dire "qualcosa" dell'aspetto di un artista?

-|-|-» Nico: Penso che i samplers possono effettivamente essere utili a presentare lo spectrum di una label e a far conoscere un artista. Ad esempio, molti ascoltatori che hanno sentito una mia song in versione sampler hanno poi acquistato l'album. Sono utili per diffondere la musica. Ed inoltre costituiscono un buon modo di far ascoltare mixes che in altre cicostanze non erano disponibili; ciò completa l'aspetto ed il backline musicale di un artista.

Quali remixes hai realizzato specificatamente nel tuo studio di registrazione personale, il Black Mirror Studio?

-|-|-» Nico: Ho remixato gli Endanger, ReActivate *smile* Ultima Bleep ed alcune bands meno conosciute. Ma spero che questa situazione cambi e che io possa trovare l'opportunità di remixare bands più famose.

Gorden, Gregsen compongono la tua live line-up. Puoi parlarci di loro e di come vi siete conosciuti?

-|-|-» Nico: Bene: ero alla ricerca di una live band, perché da soli sul palco si è un po'limitati... quindi stavo cercando un chitarrista ed un keyboarder per i live-shows, quindi scrissi molti annunci su riviste, Internet, ecc. Gorden mi rispose e scoprimmo che abitavamo nella stessa zona. Lui suonava in molte punk & rockbands e per prima cosa tentammo di combinare il suo stile chitarristico con la musica elettronica. Mi piacque subito il suo open-mindness così abbiamo fatto una jamming session ove vi è stata una grande intesa tra noi, così lui è diventato parte della band. Lo stesso fu con Greg. Sono stato anche alla ricerca di un tastierista e ho saputo che egli stava creando le live-keys per i Reaper ed i Modulate. Così l'ho contattato solo per la session ed ho scoperto che è perfetto. Greg è un grande live performer, così come Gorden. Il nostro primo concerto insieme è stato fantastico. In quel concerto con Gorden e Greg, ho pensato immediatamente: questa è la mia band, quella che stavo cercando!

Ho letto molti pareri entusiastici riguardo a te sui forums. Come vivi il rapporto col pubblico sia nei concerti che privatamente?

-|-|-» Nico: Adoro suonare sul palco, perché dà un feedback diretto con la folla. D'altra parte, sono felice per tutte le mail che ricevo e apprezzo il contatto con i fans. Myspace è molto utile anche per questo.

"Remote", il tuo nuovo cd debutto, ritrae nella sua sleeve un paesaggio abbandonato, oscurato da malinconiche nuvole grigie. Questa immagine riflette qualcosa riguardo il suo contenuto?

-|-|-» Nico: Definitivamente. Ho scelto questa immagine perché mostra l'umore generale di questo album. Così come il nome, "Remote", è l'immagine della distanza intesa liricamente.

Come hai conosciuto la label A Different Drum per la quale hai firmato? Hai lavorato autonomamente e liberamente nella realizzazione del tuo cd oppure ci sono state direttive specifiche a cui hai dovuto attenerti?

-|-|-» Nico: Siamo entrati in contatto dopo aver sentito le mie prime tracce come Midnight Resistance attraverso Myspace. Alcune settimane più avanti ho ottenuto il contratto. Sono stato fortunato ad avere completa libertà artistica nella realizzazione dell'album. Penso che questo sia il grande vantaggio nella scena indipendente, quella di poter esprimere le proprie visioni musicali. Ma Todd Durrant della ADD è sempre un grande aiuto e sono a lui riconoscente che abbia reso possibile questo album.

Perchè hai accettato di lavorare per una label americana e non per una europea? Eppure il nostro mercato electro è molto florido!

-|-|-» Nico: Ho pensato che fosse piacevole lavorare per un'etichetta americana e forse ottenere una licenza per una pubblicazione europea, così da essere presente su entrambi i mercati. Ma ho sottovalutato tutte le difficoltà circa ottenere la promozione in Europa/Germania se hai firmato negli States. E le etichette sono diventate molto caute nel rilasciare contratti con i nuovi arrivati; ciò è dovuto alle deboli vendite dei cd ed i download illegali. Ma in questi giorni di globalizzazione e di Internet stores, non è un problema reperire l'album in tutto il mondo o utilizzare il modo legale per scaricarlo, come iTunes. Ma ho il il grande supporto dall'agenzia tedesca Codeline Records (www.codeline-records.de)

Una buona notizia è che stai realizzando anche il primo singolo estratto dall'album. Perchè hai scelto proprio "Recall these Days"? Conterrà anche qualche traccia inedita?

-|-|-» Nico: Il singolo dovrebbe essere una traccia clubby dall'approccio "amichevole", perché ciò è importante per entrare nelle DJ in-Setlists. E poi, il singolo conterrà extended versions del mix originale, remixes da Vasi Vallis dei Frozen Plasma e Silica Gel ed una esclusiva B-side ". Si tratta di una speciale edizione su CD e su vinile, in modo che diverrà una bel capitolo da collezione.

...inoltre mi è parso di capire che stai lavorando già sul prossimo album..., vero? Avrà qualche affinità stilistica con "Remote"? Hai qualche anticipazione da dare ai lettori di Dside?

-|-|-» Nico: Sì, ho appena cominciato a scrivere le nuove canzoni e registrare alcuni demo. Il mio intento è sviluppare il mio stile e potrei dire che il nuovo album offrirà alcune sorprese. Non voglio copiare "Remote". Metterò a breve alcune nuove canzoni nel setlist per vedere come il pubblico reagisce e per sperare di fare un grande album l'anno prossimo. Visitate il mio myspace di tanto in tanto per le ultime notizie circa i progressi. Oltre al nuovo album, produco un nuovo progetto denominato Miocene che presenta un approccio più duro, più elettronico-industriale. Le prime canzoni saranno realizzate presto.

Dove si svolgono principalmente i tuoi concerti?

-|-|-» Nico: Finora abbiamo suonato pricipalmente in Germania, ma spero di esibirmi in altri paesi il prima possibile. I Midnight Resistance avrebbero dovuto partecipare al Darkstar-Festival ed avere quindi la prima possibilità di un live show in U.S.A. ma purtroppo il festival è stato annullato per la scarsa professionalità del booker. Ma ora, dopo la pubblicazione dell'album, la band ottiene sempre più l'attenzione e le richieste da molti posti, in modo che quando il fanbase sarà abbastanza forte, non costituirà più un problema suonare all'estero. Vedrò se potrò farlo anche in Italia, in avvenire!

Hi Nico, alias Midnight Resistance. Welcome to Dside! In your solo project you are the songwriter, guitarist, author and producer of the opera. Is it difficult to manage all these aspects individually?

-|-|-» Nico: Hello, it´s a pleasure for me. Well, not at all. It´s an organic process for me, to occupy all these different roles. It gives me the complete control about my music and I like this way of working, especially when writing the songs. This is the main reason, why I started my solo-project. Ok, sometimes you wish to have more distance to the songs, mainly when it comes to the production & mixing of the tracks, but I think it works good for me. And I get only positive reactions about the album

Your past as a member of ReActivate what you has you taught professionally?

-|-|-» Nico: I was involved in many projects and bands before, I worked at a studio-company, writing and producing songs for Pop/Rock and Dance-music and played in other Electro-/Synthpop-Bands, establishing my own studio, etc. So my whole musical career so far taught me professionality, the work with ReActivate is only a small part of it all.

What was the input that made you decide to separate from that band?

-|-|-» Nico: Let´s say that we had different views concerning the music and the further direction of the band and the sound. I just felt unhappy with my part in the band. But this is the past and gone, Midnight Resistance is the future. And like I mentionend above, I always wanted to realize an album completely by myself... and wanted to be the singer, too *smile*

hat role you occupied in the Reactivate project?

-|-|-» Nico: was involved as keyboarder / soundprogrammer & composer.

Today your music touches various sides. It goes from the electro to the dance athmospheric, exhibitions of guitar ... have you ever grown intimately this inclination, or you have acquired it in the last few periods?

-|-|-» Nico: I´m influenced by many musical styles, I like guitars as much as synthesizers, so I think this direction was always there for me. I like to merge different styles, to create my very own soundscape. Ok, it is impossible these days to create something completely new, but I think ecleticism isn´t bad at all. It is the sum of all my experiences and influences and my own introspective musical visions, so in a way I created something new.

Your artistic influences resulting from the 70-80-90's along with everything that comes from the new millennium. There are also other specific references to classic historical bands as Depeche Mode and Camouflage. This confirms that the DM especially have marked by fire the history of electronic panorama ... what do you think about?

-|-|-» Nico: I have much respect for Depeche Mode, because of their impressing music and of their career. And I love their music as well, but it was not the trigger for me to start making (electronic)-music at all, I´m mainly influenced by Post-Punk & (New)-Wave-Bands and the early Synth / Electronic - Movement.

... I know that "Midnight Resistance" is also the name of an arcade videogame of the year 1989. There is some similarity to you?

-|-|-» Nico: Hm, well, I started doing remixes under this projekt name, simply because I liked the sound of the name. Then I released my solo-tracks under this name and a few month later I got a record contract, so I just kept it. But I was always a fan of the C64-soundtracks / Chiptunes and videogames in general, so it´s some kind of link to the past, that the name refers to the game *smile*

You also have contributed to many compilations. According to your opinion, how the samplers may be useful? In what way can say "something" about the appearance of an artist?

-|-|-» Nico: I think samplers may be useful to present a spectrum of a label and make people aware of an artist. So many people listenend to a song of mine on a sampler and straight bought the album, so it´s helpful to spread the music. And it´s a good way to release some mixes which were unavailable before, so it completes the appearance and musical backline of an artist.

What remixes you've done specifically in your own Black Mirror Studio recording?

-|-|-» Nico: I remixed Endanger, Reactivate *smile*, Ultima Bleep, to name a few, and some not so well known bands. But I hope this will change and I´m will get the chance to remix „bigger“ bands the next time.

Gorden, Gregsen are your optional live line-up. You can talk to them and how did you know?

-|-|-» Nico: Well, I was searching for a live band, because alone on the stage looks a bit dull ;) So I was looking for a guitarist and a keyboarder for the live-shows and wrote several requests, in magazines, internet, etc. Gorden answered me and we found out that we live in the same area. He played in several Punk- and Rockbands before and wanted to try to combine his guitar-style with electronic music. I liked his open-mindness, so we did a jamming session and there was a great chemistry between us and he became part of the band. The same with Greg. I was also looking for a keyboarder and saw that he was doing live-keys for Reaper and Modulate. So I just contacted him for the session as well and it just fit perfectly. Greg is a great live performer, as well as Gorden. Our first concert together was awesome. At this gig with Gorden and Greg, I felt it instantly: This is my band, I was looking for! :)

I have read in many forums several opinions really enthusiastic about you. How you live the relationship with your audience on live sessions and privately?

-|-|-» Nico: I love it to perform the songs on stage, because it gives you a direct feedback with the crowd. On the other side, I´m happy about all the mails and appreciate the contact with the fans. Myspace is also very useful for this.

"Remote", your debut CD, portrays in his sleeve an abandoned landscape, darkened by melancholy grey clouds. Does this image reflects something about its contents?

-|-|-» Nico: Definitely. I chose this picture because it shows the overall mood of this album. Like the name – Remote – it´s a view from the distance, lyrically.

How did you know the label A Different Drum for which you signed? Have you worked independently and freely, or there were specific directives that you had to follow?

-|-|-» Nico: We got in contact after they heard my first Midnight Resistance-tracks through myspace. A few weeks later I´d got the record-deal. I was lucky to have full artistic freedom in the making of the album. I think this is the great advantage about the independent-scene, that you can express your musical visions. But Todd Durrant of A Different Drum is always a great help and I´m thankful that he made this album possible.

Why did you accept to work for an American label and not a European?...Yet our electro market is very florid!

-|-|-» Nico: I thought is was attractive to work with an american label, and maybe get licensed for an european release, to be present on both markets. But I underestimated all the difficulties about getting promotion in Europe / Germany if you´re only signed in the states. And labels became very careful in signing / licensing newcomers, due to the weak CD-sales and illegal downloads. But in these days of globalisation and internet-stores, it is not a problem to get the album worldwide or use legal download-stores like Itunes. But I get great support by the german-label / agency Codeline-Records (www.codeline-records.de)

The good news is that you're creating the first single taken from this album. Why did you choose "Recall these Days"? It will also contain some inedit track?

-|-|-» Nico: The single should be a club-friendly-song, because it´s important to get into the DJ-Setlists. And yes, the single will contain extended mixes of the original, remixes by Vasi Vallis of Frozen Plasma and Silica Gel and an exclusive B-side. And it comes in a special-edition on CD and on Vinyl, so it´ll become a nice collectors item.

..I also know that you're already working on the next MR's album ..., Nico, is it true? It will have some stylistic affinity with "Remote"? Do you have some anticipation to give to the Dside's readers?

-|-|-» Nico: Yes, I just started writing new songs and recording some demos. I´m always developing my musical style, so I can say the new album will offer some surprises, I don´t want only to copy Remote. I will put some new songs into the setlist by and by, to see how the audience reacts and hope to release a great album the next year. Just visit my myspace-page from time to time for the latest news about the progress. Besides of the new album, I produce a new project, called „Miocene“ which presents a more harder, electronic, industrial approach. The first songs will be released soon.

Where are held mainly your concerts?

-|-|-» Nico: So up to now we played mainly in germany, but I hope to play in other countries in the next time as well. Midnight Resistance should perform at the Darkstar-Festival, to have their first live-appearance in the USA, but unfortunately the Festival was cancelled due the unprofessionality of the Booker. But now, after the album release, the band gets more and more attention and requests from many places all over the world, so when the fanbase is strong enough, it shouldn´t be a problem to play abroad. Let´s see if I can make it to italy in the future *smile*
