Voi in questa serata (e quella di Milano) rappresentate l'Italia elettronica: cosa pensi della scena italiana e come vi ci ponete?

-|-|-» Paul: Lasciamo perdere Milano... La scena italiana? Mah, non ho mai preso la decisione conscia di ignorare la musica italiana di per se quando mi trasferii qui 13 anni fa, ma qualcosa mi ha sempre bloccato. So bene che ci sono diverse bands o progetti che sperimentano a fondo la scena elettronica ma personalmente non sono un grande esperto di nessuno di loro. Francamente, non credo che XP8 sia parte di una "scena italiana". Con l'avvento di Internet ora piu che mai la musica attraversa i confini nazionali e persino i continenti in pochi secondi e inoltre non mi considero italiano ne considero gli XP8 tali. Anglo-Italiani forse, non so. I molti progressi tecnologici hanno messo certamente la musica elettronica nelle mani delle masse, portando con questo cambiamento bene e male in parti uguali. Eppure, ancora non è facile riuscire ad ascoltare materiale nuovo.

Qualche nome di band italiana che trovi di particolare rilievo?

-|-|-» Paul: Ho letto recentemente ottime recensioni dei Pulcher Femina, ma non ho avuto l'occasione di ascoltarli direttamente nell'ultimo periodo. Recentemente ho visto suonare live Chaos/Order e Cybertron, e ho apprezzato molto ciò che ascoltavo ma ancora non ho trovato i loro cd in giro. Entrambe le band però sembravano soffrire del "male" che affligge tutte le band elettroniche, ovvero trovare un modo di rendere una live performance interessante: qualcosa che noi XP8, o meglio, io nella mia veste di frontman, stiamo cercando di fare. Stranamente poi, vengono regalati piu cd da ascoltare alla mia ragazza che non a me, e questo ci fa capire molto di cosa sia effettivamente la "scena italiana".

Cosa ci dici riguardo al concerto di sabato? Assemblage 23 vi ha anche dato un tributo "live" ["...and now Rome make some noise for XP8!!!" n.d.r.] ne conseguiamo che avete instaurato un buon rapporto..

-|-|-» Paul: Sono quasi del tutto soddisfatto con la mia performance on stage in Roma. Dico "quasi" poichè dubito che potrò mai essere soddisfatto al 100%, ma questo è giusto il mio modo di essere. Era un'occasione molto importante per dimostrare quello che potevo fare, and posso dire che per la prima volta mi sono davvero divertito e ho cercato di essere adeguato alla situazione. Il pubblico sembra aver gradito la nostra performance.
Riguardo Assemblage 23, direi che si, sembra proprio che ci sia un'ottimo rapporto di collaborazione fra i due gruppi, iniziando proprio dal remix che Tom ha fatto per noi su "She Says" fino al supporto di stasera su sua richiesta. Sono sicuro che collaboreremo ancora con lui nel futuro e credo anche nella concreta possibilità di altri concerti insieme. Sia Assemblage 23 che Icon Of Coil ci hanno dato commenti positivi sulla nostra musica e performance. A parte gli eventi disastrosi di domenica in quel triste club di Milano abbiamo vuto un buon weekend tutti insieme, e nel prossimo futuro ci saranno altre collaborazioni fra i tre gruppi.

La derivazione del vostro nome è una specie di acronimo "expiate"... esattamente?

-|-|-» Paul: Esattamente. Il nome della band è in inglese, quindi è da leggersi "expiate": fare ammenda o chiedere perdono, espiare i propri peccati attraverso atti di dolore. Originariamente usai l'acronimo XP8 brevemente per una serata che organizzavo con Stigmata qualche anno fa. Era sembrato un buon nome e quando Marko suggerì a me e Marco di usarlo ancora fui più che felice. E corto e facile da ricordare [anche se dopo poco abbiamo iniziato a essere confusi con XPQ-21, come loro stessi ci hanno detto durante la recente data romana]. Pagare per i propri peccati sembra collegato in qualche modo con i testi che scrivo quindi il nome mi sembra appropriato.

Cosa ci dici del vostro nuovo lavoro in uscita? L'album è una revisione del precedente piu alcune novità.. i testi sono sempre redatti dalla tua linea emotiva?

-|-|-» Paul: Il nostro nuovo album si intitola "Forgive" e dovrebbe essere disponibile per la fine di Gennaio, al più tardi metà Febbraio. Per avere il controllo totale sotto tutti gli aspetti della produzione del nostro primo album abbiamo deciso di sottoscrivere un contratto di distribuzione con MP3.COM. Questo significa che il cd sarà disponibile per essere acquistato attraverso il nostro spazio su mp3.com linkato dal nostro sito ufficiale [XP8] e quindi verrà consegnato direttamente a casa. Ovviamente avremo sempre con noi delle copie da vendere quando suoneremo live e sono sicuro che i negozi di musica piu specializzati avranno sempre qualche copia disponibile. Altrimenti, continueremo a diffonderlo online. Finora tutto il nostro materiale è sempre stato disponibile online, gratuitamente, come mp3, e continueremo a rendere disponibile una selezione dei nuovi brani online.
Il nuovo album contiene 10 brani, incluso il remix di Assemblage 23. Alcune delle traccie più "vecchie" sono state rivisitate e aggiornate al nuovo sound del gruppo, e le quattro nuove daranno probabilmente una buona idea all'ascoltatore della direzione che potremmo prendere nei prossimi mesi. Abbiamo il lato synthpop con "The Fall", passiamo attraverso l'E.B.M. piu oscura con "Angel And The Beast" e "The Slightest Sound" e ci indirizziamo verso brani maggiormente da dancefloor come "Wet Dream" e "Forgave". Indubbiamente, una direzione che abbiamo intrapreso è quella di produrre sempre piu brani su quest'ultimo stile, ma sembra che la nostra parte piu cupa sia dura a morire e quindi canzoni come Liebling [radicalmente rivista sull'album] saranno sempre presenti.
Riguardo i testi delle canzoni, per qualche ragione sono capace di scriverne solamente di autobiografici e sono sicuro che la cosa continuerò a essere cosi. Tutte le canzoni [con la sola eccezione di "Ephedra" [scritta da Marko] che scrivo parlano di un preciso mokento della mia vita e in finale non certo dei momenti migliori. Questo da alle canzoni un contenuto emotivo che per me è molto importante. Devono parlare di qualcosa di importante e se questo significa che possono risultare dolorose da ascoltare, o da cantare, fa niente. D'altronde, è davvero raro che riesca a cantare "Our Scars" senza avere voglia di piangere almeno un lacrima. Tutto questo tende a essere decisamente autodistruttivo, ma come ho già detto, in questo modo espio i miei peccato [o a volte quelli di altre persone che ho avuto la "fortuna" di incontrare]: attraverso questi atti di dolore.

Passando al tecnico che tipo di programmi utilizzate per la vostra musica? strumentazione Live?

-|-|-» Paul: Tutte queste info sono disponibili anche nella sezione GEAR del nostro sito onlie [XP8]. Ma andiano un attimo nel dettaglio: entro la fine della settimana passeremo finalmente su piattaforma Mac e Pro Tools e le cose cambieranno radicalmente nel Blue Cat Studio. Fino ad oggi abbiamo usato un PC dotato di Cakewalk Sonar, scelta basata principalmente che sia io che Marko abbiamo usato per anni Cakewalk per il nostro precedente gruppo, Retina [ ex progetto di Paul, alcune info sono visibili su www.coresect.com n.d.r.]. Poichè quindi entrambi eravamo abituati a lavorare in quel modo non abbiamo sentito la necessità di spostarci su sequencers piu quotati come Cubase [anche se ricordo i giorni andati con Cubase e l'Atari ST1040...]. Usiamo anche Reason della Propellerheads, un programma così evoluto che mi ha quasi spinto a vendere il mio vecchio Roland SH-101. Dal punto di vista sonoro, usiamo l'Access Virus Indigo [terribilmente buono] per una gran quantità dei nostri suoni. Per il resto, vi rimando al sito: non voglio tenere niente segreto, ma è tutto online, ed è una lista piuttosto lunga. C'è da aggiungere che usiamo diverse tecniche di post produzione su ciascuno dei nostri suoni [equalizzazioni, compressioni e altro], quindi conoscere la strumentazione è solo metà della faccenda. Il resto è dovuto ai circa 500 plugins ed effetti presenti sul nostro computer ;)
Passando al discorso live... i concerti delle bands elettroniche sono sempre stati un problema: come puoi riuscire a non essere noioso? La nostra musica non può essere riprodotta fedelmente live e così abbiamo dovuto fare una scelta: prendere l'esempio dei Faithless, e trovare quindi ulteriori musicisti live per suonare chitarre e proporre nuove "versioni", o usare basi. Chiaramente fino ad ora la scelta è caduta sulle basi. Marco suona linee aggiuntive sul Virus, Marko miza il tutto onstage e usa filtri ed effetti per mantere le cose interessanti e il piu possibile varie e ovviamente io canto. E quindi, in finale dipende totalmente da me il rendere il live interessante.
Recentemente poi abbiamo acquistato un interessante sequencer live, Ableton, che proveremo molto presto: in questo modo tutte le basi saranno composte da traccie audio separate che potranno essere messe in loop individualmente, mutate o effettate sul momento. In questo modo quindi le canzoni potranno essere allungate in "diretta" e le cose dal nostro punto di vista diventeranno molto piu interessanti. Le possibilità sono infinite.

Dirigendoci invece sul personale, cosa vi aspettate dal vostro lavoro?

-|-|-» Paul: Il 2003 seguirà questa direzione:
"Forgive" finalmente vedrà la luce e il pubblico finalmente potrà avere a disposizione un prodotto finito. Ovviamente, ne manderemo copie alle diverse etichette, ai distributori, promoters e dj che già si sono dimostrati interessati nel nostro lavoro.
XP8 continuerà a suonare live, e stiamo definendo gli ultimi dettagli che ci permetteranno di partecipare in alcuni dei festival estivi all'estero. L'interesse creato da "Forgive" ci darà la possibilità quindi di attrarre l'attenzione delle etichette discografiche, e questo ovviamente ci aprirà molte porte. Sempre più gente ascolterà XP8.

Ve lo auguriamo e riguardo a progetti futuri?

-|-|-» Paul: Questo weekend insieme a Icon Of Coil e Assemblage 23 è stato davvero molto fruttuoso dal punto di vista dei contatti. Per ora non dirò altro.

Tonight in Rome (and last night in Milan) XP8 have acted for the electro Italian scene. What do you think about it and what is your role in it?

-|-|-» Paul: I don't want to speak about Milan….So about Italian scene? Hum, I've never taken a consciously decision about overlooking Italian music, but since I 've moved here 13 years ago there has always been something which has stopped me towards it. I know there are several interesting bands or projects which deeply explore electro music, but personally I'm not so involved about them. I honestly don't think XP8 must be considered an Italian band. We are in the internet age, music has never had like today so many chances to break out through borders and reach other continents in the space of few seconds. I don't consider my self an Italian boy or XP8 and Italian band. Anglo-Italian, maybe, but I don't know. Development in technology has put electro music into the hands of everyone and I find an equal amount of positive and negative points in that, but in despite of all that, it's still difficult to listen to real new stuff .

Tell me about which are the Italian bands you can consider more relevant

-|-|-» Paul: I've read excellent reviews about Pulcher Femina, through I've never had the chance to listen directly to them.
I've lately been to live shows performed by Chaos Order and Cybertronic, I've really appreciated both of the two on stage but still haven't been able to find their cds in the stores. Although I've enjoyed their shows I must underline they suffer from the affection of all electro bands: they are unable to act in a overwhelming way. And this is what I constantly try to do with XP8 in my frontman's role. Another strange thing that says long about Italian scene is that my girlfriend receives far more promo cds than me!

Tell me more about your last performance, Assemblage 23 dedicated you a tribute during their stage ("….and now Rome make some noise for XP8!") I guess it's because you've established a good relationship with them ..

-|-|-» Paul: I'm almost satisfied about the show in Rome. I must say "almost" because it's typical of me never been completely satisfied at 100%.
In Rome we had an important chance to demonstrate what we can do and for the first time I've really had good time during the performance, I've really did my best to be adequate to it. Also the audience seemed to enjoy our performance. Concerning Assemblage 23, yeah, there has been an excellent collaboration with them and this is why Tom has made the "She says" remix for us and asked us for a support tonight. I'm sure we will collaborate again in the next future and I'm convinced of a concrete possibility to perform again together. Both Assemblage 23 and Icon of Coil has given us positive comments about this evening and our music. If we leave aside the awful experience in that sad club in Milan, I can say we have spent a great week end together. In the next future we can collaborate again with both of the two.

The meaning of your name is an acronym of the verb "expiate"..

-|-|-» Paul: Exactly. The band name is English and you must read as the word "expiate": to beg pardon, to expiate the sins through pain. I had already used XP8 name for a short time for some party arranging few years ago. So when Marko suggested Stigmata and me to use it I've been very glad about that, I think it's a beautiful name. It's short and easy to remember although people now begin to confuse us with XPQ-21 as they confirmed me during a recent show in Rome. But I think the meaning of XP8 - to pay for your sins - is very closed to what I wrote in my lyrics, so I find it perfect.

What about your latest artwork? It's composed by some revision of old stuff and some new songs…are your lyrics still in line with your emotions?

-|-|-» Paul: Our new album is called "Forgive" and is going to be available within the end of January or the first half of February. In order to have a total control on its production and distribution we have decided to seal a contract with MP3.com. That means our album will be available on line through a reserved space on mp3.com which is linked to our official site [XP8] so the album will be delivered directly to home. Obviously we will bring some copies during the stages and I'm sure there will be some specialized shop which sell it.
On the contrary we'll go on with on-line delivery. Since today our stuff has always been on line as free mp3s and we want to continue to offer some selected tracks also from our latest work. The new album includes 10 tracks: the Assemblage 23 remix, some old songs which have been revised and up to dated to our new sound, and 4 new songs that can be give you a clear idea on what direction we 'll take in the next months. We have some synthpop with "The fall", a darker EBM in "Angel and the Beast" and "Slightest Sound" , more dance-floor-like songs as "wet dream" and "Forgave". Without doubts, we have taken the decision to product more dance songs, although our darker side is very hard to die: tracks like Liebling (heavily revisited in the new album) will always be available. For some reasons, my lyrics seem to be written by an autobiographic side and I think I will always write them in this way. All songs, except for Ephedra - written by Marko- are reflections of particular moments of my life and definetly they're not the best. This peculiarity of my songs give them an emotional content, which is incredibly important to me. So I don't really care if sometimes it's very hard listening or singing them. For instance, It's nearly impossible to me singing "Our scars" without dropping at least a tear. It could seem a self-harming behaviour but as I've told you before, this is my way to expiate my sins or other people's (speaking about people I had the "fortune" to meet), or doing pain acts.

Let's talk about the technical GEAR: what are the software you manage in studio and on stage?

-|-|-» Paul: You can find this kind of information under the GEAR section on our site, but here are some details: we are starting to work on the Mac platform with Protools, which are a great change in the Blue Cat Studio. So far we have employed a PC and CakeWalk Sonar because both Marko and me have been accustomed to them since the time of our previous experience with RETINA [Paul's old project, find some info at www.coresect.com n.d.r.]. We have worked so long with CakeWalk we never felt the need to turn into something widely distributed like Cubase (but I knew it through ATARI ST1040) We also deploy "Reason" by Propellerheads, a so widely developed software that I've been nearly tempted to sell my old Roland SH-101. Concerning our sounds, we use Access Virus Indigo (very very good) for a huge quantity of sounds. For further information please visit our site: I don't want to keep anything for me but the list is almost endless and it's already there. We use several methods for post production (equalization, stuffing, etc ) for each of our sounds, so it's not enough to speak about instruments. They are just one half of the stuff we employ. The other one is due to about 500 plugins loaded on our computer!
Live shows are always a very problematic thing for electro bands like us. The challenge is making an interesting show and don't bother the audience. Reproducing our music on stage without difference from the studio sessions is impossible. So we need to make a choice: act like band as FAITHLESS and finding adding musicians who can play guitars and play different versions of our songs; or have some pre-recorded line bases. So far we have chosen the second option. Marco plays adding lines with VIRUS, Marko mixes and filter trying to keep the tunes interesting and various and of course I sing. So at the end it's up to me trying to make an exciting performance. Lately we have bought a good live sequencer called Ableton and we are testing it very soon because it will gave us the chance to recorder individual and separated tracks in our bases and put them separately into the loop. So we could change some effects and extend the songs during the performance. We will have infinite possibilities.

Speaking personally, what are your expectations?

-|-|-» Paul: Here is my forecast for 2003:
"Forgive" is going to be released soon and eventually the audience will have the chance to enjoy a complete, full work. Obviously we are going to send it to labels and distributors and also to some promoters who have already shown interest towards us. XP8 will perform other live shows: we are already clearing some details for our participation to some summer festival abroad. "Forgive" is also giving us the chance to gain labels' attention and open futher possibilities. We'll increase our popularity.

I hope so, tell me something about your future programs?

-|-|-» Paul: The week end we've just spent with Assemblage 23 and Icon of Coil, has been highly profitable for our contacts, but I can't really say anything more for the moment.
