Ciao Nathan "Autohypnosys, è un piacere averti con noi su Dside... I demo che hai incominciato a proporre nel tuo sito nel 2004 hanno contribuito a farti conoscere dal pubblico? Quali songs erano incluse in quel demo?

-|-|-» Nathan: E' un piacere avere l'opportunità di parlarvi della mia musica. Esordendo nel 2004 ho incominciato a mettere qualche mp3 on line per far conoscere Autohypnosis al pubblico. Alcune di queste sono songs che ho finito per introdurre in "The Surface" EP (come "Fractured Beauty","Peeling Paint" e "The Numbers"), altre erano songs che sto utilizzando per il mio prossimo lavoro. Altre ancora sono tracce che ho deciso di non utilizzare più.

La tua mixture di synthpop ha qualcosa di inusuale, sembra più un insieme di differenti ispirazioni. Ci vuoi dire qualcosa di questo stile?

-|-|-» Nathan: Penso sia diverso perchè non cerco di creare un semplice o un classico synthpop. Ho molteplici influenze musicali che comprendono una grande varietà di stili ed è semplicemente naturale per me integrare più di un genere nella mia musica. Inoltre, non ho alcun interesse verso sonorità retrò o cercare di suonare come un qualsiasi altro artista.

Tu suoni individualmente, giusto? Perchè un progetto solista e non una band?

-|-|-» Nathan: Sì, fin'ora Autohypnosis è stato un progetto solista, sia in termini di registrazione che di concerti dal vivo. Nel 2003 sono stato il singer in una rock band chiamata The Big Secret e mi è piaciuto molto stare in una band, ma può essere anche difficile cercare di scrivere musica con altre persone. Dopo che la band si sciolse, nel 2004, ho cercato di formare un nuovo gruppo rock, ma non ho mai trovato i musicisti giusti per completare la line-up. Il percorso di cercare e formare una nuova band mi ha lasciato frustrato ed a quel punto ho deciso che era meglio fare le cose da me, almeno per un pò. Avevo già iniziato a quel punto con Autohypnosis come progetto solista. Doveva essere solo un progetto estemporaneo ma ha finito col diventare quello principale. Penso di aver fatto la scelta giusta ma non escludo ancora collaborazioni se la situazione proseguirà così.

Hai ufficialmente in attivo l'EP "The Surface" del 2006. Stai preparando qualcosa di imminente?

-|-|-» Nathan: sì. Attualmente sto registrando quello che sarà il primo full-lenght album di Autohypnosis. Siccome sono ancora in fase di recording non so esattamente quando lo terminerò, spero comunque entro la fine del 2008, al più tardi.Ho realizzato "The Surface" EP nel Marzo del 2006 e avevo sperato di pubblicare qualcos'altro ne frattempo,visto che sono trascorsi due anni. Ma la scrittura e la registrazione di un album può essere un processo davvero molto lungo e certamente non voglio correre il rischio di non realizzarlo bene come voglio.

"Electricity" è un buon esempio di electro melodia: è stato questo il tuo brano preferito dell'EP, oppure qualche altra traccia ha funzionato meglio?

-|-|-» Nathan: A me piacciono "Electricity","Peeling Paint" e "The Numbers". Sono tutte sullo stesso piano e sono tre delle migliori songs che io abbia mai scritto. Molta gente pensa che "Electricity" sia il mio pezzo preferito e posso capire perchè. Penso che probabilmente possegga la melodia più catturante di tutti gli altri i miei brani.

Quale label hai scelto per i tuoi lavori?

-|-|-» Nathan: Ho pubblicato "The Surface" sulla mia etichetta Postmodern Dream Records. Chiamarla Record label può essere un pò ingannevole, anche se è solo qualcosa che ho creato per divulgare la mia musica.Spero di avere il tempo e le risorse per trasformarla in un'etichetta discografica pienamente funzionante in modo da scritturare altre bands ma adesso ho troppo da lavorare.

Hai qualche paticolare aspirazione per il futuro? E' meglio suonare in uno spazio confinato ed indipendente oppure cercare nuovi sbocchi commerciali e certamente più redditizi?

-|-|-» Nathan: Con il prossimo album vorrei raggiungere definitivamente un pubblico più vasto. Vorrei davvero firmare per una label che mi offra un buon affare, ma non ho speranze o aspettative che ciò possa accadere.Al momento sto progettando di pubblicare l'album da me. Prima però devo finirlo!

Dal vivo suoni praticamente tutti gli strumenti. Dove hai imparato?

-|-|-» Nathan: Ho imparato da solo a cantare, suonare la chitarra e la tastiera. Vorrei effettivamente tornare indietro nel tempo e prendere alcune lezioni quando ero giovane per poter essere divenuto in seguito un cantante migliore. Per fortuna so fare abbastanza per registrare ed eseguire tutto da solo.

Prima di Autohypnosis hai lavorato in altri progetti come Shooting the Decoy, Glue.. .parlaci di queste esperienze..

-|-|-» Nathan: Glue è un cd tributo ai Duran Duran pubblicato nel 1999. Ho registrato una cover di "Girls on Film" (sotto il mio proprio nome,non Autohypnosis). I Duran Duran sono la mia band preferita e fu molto divertente contribuire in omaggio a loro. Shooting the Decoy è il titolo del mio primo cd che ho pubblicato -anch'esso sotto il mio nome, non Autohypnosis- nel 2002. E' una miscela di rock, synthpop ed altri stili di musica elettronica. L'ultima traccia sull'album, una song elettronica intitolata "Solve the Mistery", è stata quella che mi ha dato l'ispirazione originaria di concentrarmi maggiormante sulla musica elettronica, per cui l'esperienza di scrivere e registrare quella song ha essenzialmente fatto sì che io creassi l'Autohypnosis sound.

Mi è sembrato di capire che la tua musica sia adatta anche come colonna sonora per film. Hai già avuto qualche proposta? Perchè consideri le tue songs idonee a questo proposito?

-|-|-» Nathan: Penso che la mia musica sarebbe ottima per essere impiegata nei films e TV shows, perchè è d'atmosfera e cinematografica. Non ho avuto ancora modo di utilizzare le mie musiche per grandi film o produzioni TV, ma mi auguro che qualcosa accada. Amo anche l'idea di comporre e registrare l'intera soundtrack di un film in futuro: un'atmosferica, elettronica colonna sonora può funzionare davvero bene. Mi piacerebbe essere coinvolto in questo progetto.

So anche che intendi andare a vivere a Los Angeles nel 2008. Come vive la situazione musicale electro questa metropoli? Conosci altre bands o artisti simili a te?

-|-|-» Nathan: Tutto ciò che si trova intorno a Los Angeles rappresenta un grande luogo per la musica e so che lì la scena (per l'elettronica e tutto il resto annesso) sia meglio di ovunque io abbia vissuto fin'ora. Ci sono innumerevoli bands e artisti lì e mi auguro che io possa fare qualcosa per distinguermi. Non vedo l'ora di approfittare delle opportunità che questa città offre.

In tutti questi anni la musica si è evoluta moltissimo in ogni suo singolo aspetto, dallo stile alla diffusione. Come vede Autohypnosis la crescente domanda di musica scaricabile on line ?

-|-|-» Nathan: Anche se continuo a preferire la qualità del suono e la presentazione visiva che i cd offrono, i downloads rappresentano chiaramente il futuro della musica. La mia musica è disponibile nei principali canali d'acquisto di musica in download (iTunes,ecc.).

...se spendi soldi per acquistare un cd, ritieni corretto scaricarlo prima on line,giusto per farsi un'idea del prodotto? Spesso, purtroppo, il prezzo pagato non ne giustifica l'acquisto...

-|-|-» Nathan: Penso che sia importante, quando una persona ama un artista, che egli supporti finanziarmente quell'artista.

Hai mai ascoltato qualche artista o band italiana di qualsiasi genere?

-|-|-» Nathan: Sono un pò imbarazzato nel dire che veramente non ho familiarità con artisti italiani. So che in un paese con una ricca cultura ci deve essere della grande musica.

In quali ambiti hai suonato fin'ora?

-|-|-» Nathan: Mi sono esibito in clubs di piccole e medie dimensioni. La migliore occasione in cui io abbia suonato era una combinazione moda/spettacolo musicale. C'erano tre atti ed io ho suonato in uno dei tre. Mentre le ragazze indossavano i vestiti abbiamo suonato nel set. Sentivo che la mia musica era adatta ottimamente all'occasione.

Che temi tratta la tua musica?

-|-|-» Nathan: Non mi piace discutere i miei testi nel dettaglio perchè credo che gli ascoltatori dovrebbero avere la libertà di capire il significato di ognuna di esse. Dico solo che amo scrivere testi che approfondiscano il pensiero umano, più che in molte altre pop songs.

Nathan: quale artista o musica non sopporti?

-|-|-» Nathan: Non perdo tempo a discutere di artisti che non mi piacciono. Vorrei piuttosto spenderlo parlando degli artisti che amo, particolarmente di quelli di cui poca gente ha sentito parlare.

Grazie per la coertese intervista, Autohypnosis.. perchè l' "auto-ipnosi" ti ha affascinato tanto da darti questo nome?

-|-|-» Nathan: Dopo aver realizzato "Shooting the Decoy" ho deciso di licenziare musica sotto il mio stesso nome. Penso sia solo più interessante farlo in questo modo. Quanto al motivo per cui ho scelto "Autohypnosis" come nome d'arte...bene, mi piaceva il suo suono e sembrava ben adattarsi alla musica che ho scritto.

Hi Nathan, it's a pleasure to have you with us on Dside. Have the demo that you have begun to propose to your online site in 2004, helped to get the public to know you ? What songs were included into that demo?

-|-|-» Nathan: It's my pleasure to have the opportunity to tell you about my music. Beginning in 2004, I started putting some mp3s online to introduce Autohypnosis to the public. Some of those were songs are ones that I ended up using on “The Surface” EP (such as “Fractured Beauty,” “Peeling Paint” and “The Numbers”), some were songs I'm currently creating new recordings of for my next release, and some of them are songs I've decided not to use anymore. Those early demos definitely helped me get some attention for my music. In particular, they helped me in getting some live shows booked beginning in 2005.

Your mixture of synthpop has something unusual,it seems more a mix of different inspirations. Do you want tell us something about this style?

-|-|-» Nathan: I think it's different because I don't try to make straightforward or “classic” synthpop. I have many musical influences that include a wide variety of styles, and it's only natural for me to integrate more than one genre into my music. Also, I have no interest in sounding retro or trying to sound like any particular other artist.

You play individually, right? Why a solo project and not a band?

-|-|-» Nathan: Yes, so far Autohypnosis has been a totally solo project, both in terms of recording and playing live. In 2003, I was the singer in a rock band called The Big Secret, and I really enjoyed being in a band, but it can also be difficult trying to write music with other people. After that band broke up, I tried in 2004 to form a new rock band, but I never found the right musicians to complete the lineup. The process of trying to form a new band left me frustrated, and at that point I decided I was better off doing things by myself, at least for a while. I had already started Autohypnosis as a solo project at that point. I had originally imagined it would just be a side project, but it ended up becoming my main music project. I think I made the right decision, but I'm always open to the idea of collaborating again if the situation is right.

You have officially in active the e.p. "The Surface" of 2006.Are you preparing something imminent?

-|-|-» Nathan: Yes. I'm currently recording what will be the first full-length Autohypnosis album. Since I'm still in the recording process, I really don't know when this new music will be finished, but I'm hoping it'll be by the end of 2008 at the latest. I released “The Surface” EP in March 2006, and I had really hoped to have something new released by now, since it's been two years. But writing and recording an album can be a lengthy process, and I certainly don't want to rush it and risk not making it as good as I can.

"Electricity" is a good example of electro melody: was it your favourite track from the e.p. or another song worked better?

-|-|-» Nathan: I like “Electricity,” “Peeling Paint” and “The Numbers” all about the same I think they're three of the best songs I've ever written. “Electricity” seems to be many people's favorite track of mine, though, and I can understand why. I think it's probably got the catchiest melodies of all my songs.

What label you choose for your works?

-|-|-» Nathan: I released “The Surface” on my own label, Postmodern Dream Records. Calling it a record label can be a bit deceptive, though; it's just something I created to release my own music. I wish I had the time and resources to turn it into a fully functioning record label so I could sign some bands, but I've got too much else to work on right now.

Have you particular aspirations for the future? Is better play in a confined, independent space or seek new commercial outlets certainly more profitable?

-|-|-» Nathan: With the forthcoming album, I would definitely like to reach a wider audience. I would happily sign with a label to release it if I were offered a good deal, but I don't have any hopes or expectations of something like that happening. As of right now, I'm planning on releasing the album myself. I've got to finish it first, though!

In your live sessions you practically play all instruments. Where have you learned?

-|-|-» Nathan: I taught myself to sing and to play guitar and keyboard. I actually wish I could go back in time and take some lessons when I was young because I'd probably be a much better player. But fortunately I can do enough to record and perform by myself.

Before to be Autohypnosis you have worked for other projects as Shooting the Decoy, Glue ... tell us about these experiences...

-|-|-» Nathan: “Glue” is a Duran Duran tribute CD that was released in 1999. I recorded a cover of “Girls on Film” for it (under my own name, not Autohypnosis). Duran Duran is my favorite band, and it was lots of fun to contribute to a tribute to them. “Shooting the Decoy” is the title of the first CD I released – also under my own name, not Autohypnosis – in 2002. It's a mixture of rock, synthpop and some other styles of electronic music. The last track on that album, an electronic song called “Solve My Mystery,” is what gave me the original inspiration to focus more on electronic music, so I credit the experience of writing and recording that song with essentially creating the Autohypnosis sound.

It seemed to me to understand that your music are also suitable as soundtracks for film. Have you already had some proposals? Why you consider your songs suitable for this purpose?

-|-|-» Nathan: I think my music would be great for use in films and TV shows because it's atmospheric and cinematic. I haven't had any songs used in major film or TV productions yet, but that's something I hope will happen. I'd also love to compose and record the entire soundtrack score for a film sometime. For certain films, an atmospheric electronic score can work really well, and I would love to be involved in that.

I also know that you intend go to live in Los Angeles in 2008. How lives the electro musical situations this metropolis? Do you know other bands or artists similar to you?

-|-|-» Nathan: Los Angeles is an all-around great place for music, and I know the music scene there (for electronic music and everything else I'm into) will be better than anywhere I've lived before. There are countless bands and artists there, so I just hope I can do something to stand out a little. I'm looking forward to the opportunities that city has.

In all these years, the music has undergone a tremendous evolution in all appearances, from style to diffusion. How now sees Autohypnosis the growing demand for downloadable music online?

-|-|-» Nathan: Although I still prefer the sound quality and visual presentation that CDs offer, downloads are clearly the future of music, and I embrace them. My music is available in most of the major outlets for buying music downloads (iTunes, etc.).

...If you had to spend money to buy a CD, do you think is correct download it only to intended to have an idea for the product? Often, unfortunately, the price does not justify the purchase done ....

-|-|-» Nathan: I think it's important when a person likes an artist's music for that person to financially support the artist.

Have you ever listened to some Italian artists or groups of each kind?

-|-|-» Nathan: I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I'm really not familiar with many Italian artists. I know that in a country with such a rich culture there must be some great music, and I imagine I'm missing out.

In which environments have you played live until now?

-|-|-» Nathan: I've performed in small and mid-sized clubs so far. The best show I ever played was a combination fashion/music show. There were three musical acts, and I was one of them, and girls were modeling clothes while we played our sets. I felt like my music fit that setting well, and I had a great time.

Which themes treats your music?

-|-|-» Nathan: I don't like to discuss my lyrics in very much detail because I feel listeners should have the freedom to figure out what the songs mean to them. I'll just say that I like writing lyrics that go deeper into the human thought process than most pop songs.

Nathan: what artist or music you hate?

-|-|-» Nathan: I don't waste time discussing which artists I don't like. I would rather spend my time talking about the artists I love, particularly the ones that few people have heard of.

Thanks for the kind Autohypnosis interview... Why the "auto-hypnosis" has you fascinated so much to give yourself this name ?

-|-|-» Nathan: After I released “Shooting the Decoy,” I decided I would rather release music under a band name than my own name. It's just more interesting that way, I think. As to why I chose Autohypnosis as a band name ... well, I just liked the sound of it, and it seemed to fit the style of music I write.
