CLAN OF XYMOX

Iniziamo dal vostro concerto a Milano. Come gia' detto non possiamo dire che l'audience sia stata molto recettiva. Le cose sono andate meglio la serata seguente? Com'è secondo te il concerto 'perfetto' ?

-|-|-» Ronny: Penso che giudichi ingiustamente il pubblico del Transilvania. L'audience è stata buona secondo me. Hanno applaudito e ballato a dispetto della grande calura della sala. C'era tantissimo caldo nel locale dovuto al fatto che erano presenti 800 persone, ognuna molto assetata e grondante di sudore, noi inclusi. Cosi' è stato difficile essere completamente coinvolti, cosa di cui sono certo sarebbe accaduta se le condizioni fossero state migliori e se il pubblico e la band avessero avuto piu' ossigeno da respirare. Ho appena visto per divertimento un bootleg di un nostro show in Brasile su YouTube. Non e' di gran qualita' ma li' il pubblico è stato perfetto, cantavano tutte le nostre canzoni. Sono cose che succedono, come nei nostri ultimi shows in Germania e Olanda, dove il pubblico non voleva ce ne andassimo. Dopo questi fortunati concerti ne abbiamo fatti di nuovi in altri paesi dove il pubblico è piu'appassionato che mai. Cio' rappresenta per noi un fatto rilevante.

Perchè 'Breaking Point'? E'un titolo senza significato o si riferisce a qualcosa in particolare?

-|-|-» Ronny : Il titolo 'Breaking Point' l'ho tratto dal testo della song 'What's going on', l'ultima traccia dell'album, qui'le parole dicono questo: 'Did we come to a 'breaking point..'?' (Siamo giunti ad un 'punto di rottura'..?). Molte parole di questo album trattano un punto da scindere, come un vero punto di svolta nella vita di ognuno, dunque il titolo riprende i contenuti delle songs. Forse si riferisce al personale allontanamento dal mio paese, l'Olanda, comunque sono certo che la gente dara'a questo titolo altre personali interpretazioni.

Ho letto che ora vivete a Lipsia e so che non è la prima volta che cambi residenza. Come interpreti questa necessità di cambiamenti nella tua vita?

-|-|-» Ronny: Ci siamo trasferiti a Lipsia, in Germania, perchè Amsterdam sembra stia morendo artisticamente. Come forse qualcuno ricorderà, quì organizzammo i nostri Gotham Festivals al 'Paradiso', ad Amsterdam- per dare il calcio d'inizio ad una nuova e più grande scena di successo. Le bands programmate erano le bands che non si potevano conoscere al di fuori di Amsterdam. Ci siamo stancati di tutto cio'perchè ci impediva di crescere come desideravamo. Anche vivere in questa città sta diventando sempre più difficile, troppe cose orribili, (che fanno notizia sui media...). Noi non possiamo fare altro che osservare il deteriorarsi delle cose.. sempre più. Sfortunatamente non è più un luogo di ispirazione in cui vivere (..dal mio punto di vista). Per contrasto Lipsia è stata per anni la capitale della scena Dark e quì ci sentiamo molto bene. La casa dove viviamo ora è molto più grande rispetto a quella di Amsterdam dove praticamente ognuno viveva in testa all'altro. Possediamo una grande, vecchia casa del Diciannovesimo secolo, l'idea è quella di invitare quì molti artisti con noi. In questa casa abbiamo semplicemente piu' spazio per fare le cose che vogliamo non essendo piu'limitati dalle ridotte dimensioni che abbiamo sperimentato fin troppo ad Amsterdam. Molti artisti che hanno realizzato albums vivono a Lipsia e la mia speranza è che nel prossimo futuro aumentino.

'Breaking Point' sembra esprimere sentimenti molto intensi di malinconia e tristezza piu' che in passato: c'è una particolare ragione per questo?

-|-|-» Ronny : Sebbene non ci fosse mai stata l' intenzione io ho seguito quella via, è sempre molto difficile controllare il modo in cui si scrive, spesso la musica ha una propria logica e propri desideri, dirige sè stessa in direzioni proprie ed imprevedili, per me è sempre una sorpresa ciò che scaturisce dal mio subconscio e se mi piace continuo. La direzione seguita è difficile da descrivere, ma si riferisce a molti pezzi lenti del passato ed a qualche ultimo brano piu' veloce come caratterizzato nel nostro singolo. Penso che questo album sia perfettamente bilanciato, inizia con il singolo dal ritmo lento, per poi aumentare di velocita'alla fine.

I Clan of Xymox hanno costruito negli anni il loro proprio sound ed ora possono essere considerati come uno dei gruppi trainanti della scena goth/darkwave: come percepite tutto cio'? Cos'è cambiato dai primi anni ad oggi?

-|-|-» Ronny : All'inizio, come tutte le bands, sei sempre alla costante ricerca della giusta via. Incominci la tua strada, poi come il buon vino il gruppo inizia a maturare e prendere il giusto sapore. Ogni band deve saper sviluppare il proprio sound e ciò è successo anche ai Ronny. Ho sperimentato a lungo e continuo sempre a cercare altri elementi da aggiungere per dare ad ogni album il proprio stile.

Il Deutsche Oper di Berlino ha rimosso dal proprio programma una 'provocante' opera di Mozard per timore di ritorsioni da parte dei Musulmani. Anche voi provenite da un paese che avuto problemi in tal merito, (mi riferisco all'omicidio di Theo Van Gogh). Qual'è la tua opinione come artista e come uomo? Cosa ne pensi delle religioni?

-|-|-» Ronny : Detesto pensare che siamo tornati indietro al Medio Evo infastidendoci per questioni religiose, pensavo che fossero cose legate al passato. Fa male vedere che la religione in generale crea un appiglio per generare rappresaglie. Senza rendercene conto stiamo vivendo una seconda Inquisizione.. (..per modo di dire...). La cultura non dovrebbe mai temere di venire frenata solo perchè certi gruppi di persone non amano altre religioni o altre forme di critica, nessuno dovrebbe mai inchinarsi a tale minaccia. Sfortunatamente ciò accade e peggiora di giorno in giorno. Vedo la società coinvolta da polemiche religiose delle quali la maggior parte della gente neppure si occupa.

La scena Goth è un settore difficile da cui poter trarre reddito: in Italia i fans acquistano pochi dischi e meno ancora si recano ai concerti: parlaci della vostra situazione. Potete vivere senza altro lavoro fuorchè suonare?

-|-|-» Ronny: Bè.. come qualunque altro artista di questa scena, tratteniamo il fiato per il futuro. Molte cose sono state dette in generale a proposito del futuro della musica, gli esempi sono stati sperimentati bene da altri artisti ma io non farò ciò perchè aiuta poco. Se la gente vuole supportarti lo fa e se non lo vuole non lo fa...

Quando ho ascoltato per la prima volta 'Breaking Point' sono stato subito catturato dal vostro approccio e più lo ascoltavo e più ne rimanevo affascinato: sembra che ci siano riferimenti a nuances ed atmosfere elettroniche, Goth e riguardanti il vecchio stile Dark Wave mixati assieme creando un perfetto connubbio tra nuove e passate influenze: come considerate il vostro album dopo qualche mese dalla pubblicazione?

-|-|-» Ronny: Necessito di più tempo per giudicarlo. Sono solo felice del tuo commento e del fatto che hai capito perfettamente il punto.

'Cynara' sembra che abbia un grande sentimento in sè, di cosa tratta?

-|-|-» Ronny: Come suggerisce il titolo, ci si riferisce ad una figura femminile che ti piacerebbe conoscere. Il resto può essere colmato dalle emozioni e dai riferimenti dell'ascoltatore, questo è il miglior modo di interpretarla.

Hai inciso due album dove erano inclusi vostri brani remixati da altre bands: quali sono le tue impressioni e cosa avete imparato dall'operato di altri artisti, o nulla?

-|-|-» Ronny: Bene, se un altro artista mi fa un remix io non sono convolto in tutto ciò e non dovrei essere altrettanto convolto in quel processo perchè voglio un artista che faccia qualcosa del tuo pezzo ma stilizzandolo sotto il punto di vista del remix. Ciò perchè è abbastanza interessante ascoltare remixes. Una band può sembrare completamente differente perchè si sottopone ad un nuovo approccio. Per me è solo un divertimento remixare pezzi di altre bands...

Quali gruppi raccomandereste in questo momento?

-|-|-» Ronny : Nessuna band lontana dal flusso principale :)

Avete un messaggio finale per noi considerando che in questi giorni sono 6 anni che viviamo come Darkzine?

-|-|-» Ronny: Bene, congratulazioni.... spero che manteniate vivo il vostro interesse musicale per almeno altri sei anni !

Let's start from your last gig in Milan: well, as already said, we can't say the audience was very responsive...Did things get better the next night ?
And which is for you the perfect live gig ?

-|-|-» Ronny: I think you do the audience in Transilvania injustice. The audience was fine to me, they clapped, responded and danced despite the soaring heat! It was very, very hot in the venue due to the fact there were more than 800 people there, everyone was very thirsty and dripping with sweat , including us. So it was hard to go totally insane which I am sure would have happened when the conditions were a bit better and the audience (and band) had a bit more oxygen to breathe.. :)
I just saw a bootleg of a show from Clan Of Xymox in Brazil on Youtube. Just have a look for the fun of it. It is not of great quality but the audience was
perfect , singing along with the songs. Things like that happen, just like our last four shows in Germany and Holland were people keep asking us back.
We did after that luckily many other shows in other countries where the audience is more passionate then ever, so for us that is a relief that it is not us!

Why 'Breaking point' ? It's just a meaningless title or does it refer to something in particular?

-|-|-» Ronny : The title Breaking Point I took from the lyrics in the song ' What's Going On ', the last track on the album. Here the words go like: Did we come to a Breaking Point? .... a lot of lyrics on this album handle the topic of splitting up, basically when people split up, or thinking about it , it is a
serious turning point in everyone's life, so the title covers the contents of the songs. and maybe my own personal breaking loose from my country the
Netherlands ...anyway I am sure people will give some kind of extra meaning to the title, but that is solely their own :)

I've read you live in Leipzig now and I know it's not the first time at all you change the place you live in: how do you interpret this need of 'changes'
in your life?

-|-|-» Ronny: We moved to Leipzig in Germany because Amsterdam felt like it was bleeding artistically to death. As some people maybe can remember we organised our Gotham festivals in Pardiso, -Amsterdam -to kick start a new and bigger scene to a certain success. The bands programmed were the bands we actually never were able to see otherwise in Amsterdam. We just grew tired of doing this because it did not seems to grow bigger as anticipated. Also the city is getting harder and harder to live in, too many horrible things - which made headline news -were happening and we can only see things deteriorating even further. Unfortunately it is not an inspiring place to live in anymore. ( from my point of view) On the absolute contrast is Leipzig which is for years
the capital of the Dark scene and we feel very comfortable here. The place we now live is very big compared with the small housing conditions we had in
Amsterdam , where everyone practically lives on top of each other.
We own a very big old 19th century house and the idea is that in the near future more artist will come and live in our house. We have simply more space to do the things we want to do and we are not restricted by the smaller living conditions we knew only too well from Amsterdam. Many Artist -who released albums- live in Leipzig and my only guess is that it will be even more in the near future.

'Breaking point' seems to express very intense feelings of melancholy and sadness even more than in the past: is there any particular reason for that?

-|-|-» Ronny : Although it was never the intention but I guess it just happened that way, in a way it is always hard to control the way you write, music always has it's own logic and will. It steers itself ways you did not think of yet. In that way it always for me as well a surprise what comes out of my subconscious, and if I like it I carry on with it.
The direction is difficult for me to describe but indeed will come close to many slower songs I did in the past and a few more contemporary up beat ones
like featured on the single. I think this album has the perfect balance for me , it starts with the single but goes slowly into the more quieter songs until it
picks up the tempo again in the end.

Clan Of Xymox have built in years their real own 'sound' and now can be considered as one of the leading bands of the goth/dark wave scene: how do you
perceive it ? What has changed from the early years to now?

-|-|-» Ronny : In the beginning as a band you are always looking for the right path. You start with whatever comes your way and slowly like good wine the band starts to mature and getting the right flavour. Each band has to develop their sound and that happened also with Clan Of Xymox. I experimented a lot and still look for extra additions or approaches to give each album their own specific flavour.

Berlin's Deutsche Oper has removed the provocative staging of a Mozart opera from its schedule for fear of enraging Muslims...you also come from a land that had has his own problems concerning this matter (I refer to Theo Van Gogh’s homicide)...what is your opinion as an artist and as a man? What do you think of religions?

-|-|-» Ronny : I hate to think that we are thrown back to the Middle Ages again and have to bother with religion issues I thought we dealt with a long time ago and would be a thing of the past.
It is heartbreaking to see that religion in general gets a foothold into peoples decision making again. Before we know it we get a second inquisition ( in a
manner of speaking). Culture should never have to be afraid of being curbed just because certain groups do not like religious or any other form of criticism. No one should ever have to bow for such a threat. Unfortunately it happens and gets worse by the day. I see society gets embroiled into religious polemics which most people do not even care for.

The goth scene is an hard area for living just with music income: i.e. in Italy fans poorly buy records and even less come to the shows: what about your situation? Can you live with no other job than playing music?

-|-|-» Ronny: Just ... but like any other artist from this scene we are holding our breath for the future. So many things have been said about the future of music in general and warnings have been placed by other artist as well that I won’t go in it again because it does not help one bit . If people want to support you they do and when they don’t , they don’t ..

When I first listened to 'Breaking Point' I was instantly hooked by your approach and the more I listened to it the more I have been fascinated by it:
it seems you put all references in it: electronics,goth,atmospheric nuances and old style dark wave mix together creating something that
perfectly matches old and new influences: how do you consider your album now after some months after his publishing ?

-|-|-» Ronny: I need more time than that to judge it in time. I am just happy with your comment above and the realisation that you got the point completely.

'Cynara' sounds like there's a very strong feeling in it: what deals about ?

-|-|-» Ronny: Like the title suggest about a female person who you like to get to know through and through. The rest is to be filled in by the listeners own
emotions and references, that is the way I like it best :)

You had two album experiences of making your tracks remixed by someone else: what would you say you've learned from working with other artists, if
anything?

-|-|-» Ronny: Well , if other artist do me a remix I am not involved in that at all , and I should also not be involved in that process because you want an artist to make something of your track but styled to the remixers point of view. That is why it is quite interesting to hear remixes. A band can sound totally different because of a new approach. For me it is just a fun thing to do as well , remixing other bands..

What bands would you recommend us at the moment?

-|-|-» Ronny : Any band away from the main stream :) Qualsiasi band che non fa parte del main stream.

Do you have a final message for us considering that on these days it's 6 years we survive as Darkzine?

-|-|-» Ronny: Well, congratulations.. I hope you keep your interest in music at least another 6 years
