Ciao Holger, il nome Belborn deriva da Beltane e si riferisce alla tua data di nascita. Ci potresti spiegare la relazione tra la tua cultura neopagana e la tua "weltanshauung"? Tu e Susanne vi interessate anche di esoterismo, ma di quale tipo? (Infatti si abusa di questa parola che da sola non significa nulla)

-|-|-» Belborn: Sono d'accordo, "Esoterismo" non significa nulla e più del 90% è solo spazzatura! I nostri interessi personali sono ampi. Susanne è interessata alle erbe medicinali e alle pietre. Ci piace anche confrontare le figure mitologiche e religiose di tutto il mondo, sempre cercando di trovare l'origine delle origini. I miei principali interessi si possono ritrovare soprattutto nell'occultismo e nella mitologia. Noi non siamo però coinvolti in nessuna organizzazione né in nessun ordine, in tutti i casi non voglio dire di più riguardo alle nostre attività e azioni della nostra vita privata.
La nostra "Weltanschauung" può essere interpretata come un modo di sentire. Ci sentiamo e ci vediamo come parte della natura. Tutto è connesso e noi nuotiamo in questo fiume che è la vita eterna. La cultura neopagana può aiutare a capire che "tutto esiste realmente".

Nella tua musica c'è una forte presenza della natura, ho sempre pensato ad una musica "panteistica". Sono sicuro che i paesaggi bavaresi siano una grande fonte di ispirazione per te, la traccia video su "Y" ne è una guida perfetta. Che cosa sta bruciando alla fine?

-|-|-» Belborn: Ciò che brucia alla fine del video, è un sole di paglia fatto da me. Ciò che è stato inserito in questo sole diventava cenere in un giorno preciso e in un momento preciso. Sicuramente i luoghi nei quali viviamo sono una grossa fonte di ispirazione. La nostra musica e i nostri testi devono avere pochi punti reali di contatto. Siamo molto interessati alle leggende riguardanti la nostra zona. Forse alcune di queste faranno parte dei nostri futuri lavori?! Mi piace la definizione di musica "panteistica", è una grande descrizione!

Parliamo del modo in cui componi, arrangi e registri la musica di Belborn; sono anche interessato alle tue performance live: sarai solo tu con la tua chitarra senza Susanne?

-|-|-» Belborn: Si, è vero! Belborn apparirà "live" solo con Holger e una chitarra acustica. Forse in futuro sarò supportato da alcuni collaboratori, ma questo lo stabilirà il caso. Non abbiamo pensato a nessuna band di supporto per il tour. Le canzoni durante un concerto risultano ridotte per forza di cose, ma sono sicuramente pure e dirette. La nostra musica viene composta dapprima completamente nella mia testa e poi cerco di portarla al di fuori della mia mente. Tutto è registrato a casa col minor equipaggiamento possibile e a tarda notte.

La tua musica può sembrare piuttosto naive, sia per le melodie, che per gli arpeggi e gli arrangiamenti; sei d'accordo? E come mai hai scelto questa strada?

-|-|-» Belborn: Non ho scelto questa strada-è solo accaduto di seguirla! Posso creare solo la musica che esce da me stesso. Faccio ciò che devo fare. Credo che ogni "artista" (scusate, odio questa parola!) conosca la sua forza interiore… Capisco che la musica di Belborn possa sembrare in un certo modo naive, ma penso che la parola migliore possa essere musica "onesta".

Sembra che ci sia un'evoluzione sotterranea nella tua discografia: che cosa è cambiato dalla tua prima uscita, più marziale e oscura, e "Y"? La tua non è la solita musica neofolk, con voci sempre basse, percussioni marziali e la stessa chitarra ritmica. Ogni canzone è diversa dalle altre, usi anche differenti strumenti.

-|-|-» Belborn: Noi ci vediamo come una band underground. Siamo totalmente indipendenti e facciamo tutto noi (musica, parole, artwork, produzione, sito web…)! Prima di tutto creiamo musica per noi stessi e non per qualche tipo di persona "speciale" o contesto particolare. Facciamo ciò che facciamo e un giorno ci potrebbe succedere di suonare in modo completamente differente da quello attuale

Ci sono molte compilation nelle quali apparite, qual è la tua preferita e perché?

-|-|-» Belborn: Penso che l'ultima sia sempre quella preferita (haha). Sinceramente, penso che "Wir Rufen Deine Wolfe" sia un lavoro davvero unico. Una compilation veramente interessante, perché ogni band ha fatto una canzone speciale, basata sul grande poema di Friedrich Hielscher. Finora è la mia compilation preferita… Vorrei raccomandare il cd di Hermann Hendrich. Una parte del ricavato è usata per il restauro dei murales e dei dipinti di Hermann Hendrich.

Parliamo delle rune: oggi molte band le usano, ma a volte sembra più per moda che per altro: che cosa significano le rune per te e perché nelle copertine dei tuoi cd compaiono solo scritte runiche?

-|-|-» Belborn: Siamo certi che a molte persone non piaccia il fatto che usiamo le rune in modo così ovvio e pubblico. La decisione ha origine da una conversazione avvenuta a notte fonda con un conoscente (a questo punto saluto Hannover!). Abbiamo parlato delle rune, della loro storia e della loro attuale cattiva reputazione (soprattutto qui in Germania!). Siamo giunti alla conclusione che sarebbe bello usare le rune il più possibile in pubblico. E' vero che l'uso delle rune sembra essere diventato una moda. Comunque a noi non interessa, questo aiuta a farle diventare di pubblico interesse! La magia delle vere rune sarà sempre una attrattiva per poche persone speciali. Le rune personali sono "porte" e fonte di potere per noi. Se le "interroghi" loro ti possono dare una risposta…

Nel tuo sito web c'è scritto: "preparatevi per una nuova età dell'oro…" siete tutt'altro che nichilisti, credete veramente di poter vedere una nuova età dell'oro? E secondo te che cos'è l'oro?

-|-|-» Belborn: Sicuramente non mi aspetto di vedere un'età dell'oro-non in questa vita! Se ci sarà veramente oro (e forse il sole lì splenderà per sempre) non voglio comunque vederlo. Personalmente non mi piace il colore dell'oro, ma esso simboleggia la salute (equilibrio) e la purezza (giustizia). Hmmm, ma se guardiamo alla storia sembrerebbe rappresentare più che altro crimine, avarizia e assassinio…

Parliamo dei tuoi artwork e dei disegni che tu personalmente curi. Sono anche interessato al significato del tuo logo; che cosa rappresenta?

-|-|-» Belborn: Il nostro logo è una specie di Fenice. E' costruita attorno alla cosiddetta runa-Wendehorn (una forma della runa Hagal, che contiente la runa della vita e della morte). Il nostro logo rappresenta il ciclo continuo di tutte le cose: vita/morte, giorno/notte, vittoria/sconfitta, storia/eternità…!!! La fenice rinasce dalle sue ceneri e così farà ogni vero valore, sentimento o azione; in qualche tipo di forma esso ritornerà sempre. Non c'è molto da dire sui disegni. Sono pieni di forze simboliche, ma richiederebbe troppo tempo spiegare che cosa esattamente vi sia rappresentato. Sta a chi guarda cercarne il significato-per alcuni non ne avranno nessuno…

L'ultima domanda: è vera la tua futura collaborazione con Marilyn Manson?! Ha ha ha!!! No, scusami, è uno scherzo, vorrei sapere quali sono i tuoi artisti preferiti nella musica e nelle arti grafiche. Ti piace David Bowie?!

-|-|-» Belborn: No, David Bowie non mi piace, ma alcune parti della sua vita sono molto interessanti-Ziggy Stardust per esempio! Una collaborazione con Marilyn Manson sarebbe grandiosa. Hm, penso che gli scriverò presto una satanica e-mail… Al momento la mia band preferita sono (ancora) i Kirlian Camera; Angelo Bergamini è un genio! Sono anche un grande ammiratore delle vecchie WSD-bands. Nelle arti grafiche ammiro H.R. Giger, Joachim Luetke e Joe Coleman. Per altri "artisti preferiti" guardate i link sul nostro sito web!

Hallo und guten tag holger, the name Belborn comes from Beltane and concerning your date of birth, please explain your relationship between neopagan culture and your “weltanschauung”; you and susanne are also involved in esoterism, but what kind of esoterism? (this word is abused and dosen’t mean anything alone)

-|-|-» Belborn: I agree, “Esoterism” says nothing at all and more than 90 percent is pure rubbish! Our personal interests are wide-spread. Susanne is busy with medicinal herbs and stones. We both like comparing mythological and religious figures worldwide, always looking for the origin of the origin. My favourite contents and topics can be mainly found in occultism and mythology. We are neither involved in any form of organisation or order, nor do I want to tell more about our private activities and actions.
Our “Weltanschauung” can be explained as a feeling. We see and feel ourselves as a part of nature. Everything is connected and we swim in this river of eternal life. Neopagan culture could help to realize how “everything really is”.

In your music there is a strong presence of nature, I used to think about a pantheistic music, I’m sure bavarian landscapes are a great source of inspiration for you, the cd-rom video on “Y” it’s a perfect guide, and what’s burning in the end?

-|-|-» Belborn: It´s a selfmade sun of straw, that´s burning at the end of the video. That which was put inside of the sun turned to ashes on that special day at that special time.
It´s true that the landscape we are living in is a big source of inspiration. Our music and the lyrics do have a few real points of contact. We are very interested in all the legends here in our area. Maybe some of them will be a part of future works?!
I like the words “pantheistic music”, that´s a great description!!!

Let’s talk about your methods of composing, arrange and recording Belborn’s music; I ’m also interested in your live performance: only you with your guitar whitout Susanne?

-|-|-» Belborn: Yes, that´s true! Belborn will appear “live” only through Holger and an acoustic guitar. Maybe I will be supported by some collaborators in the future, but that will only happen “by chance”. We don´t plan a real support-band or tour. The songs in a concert are of course very reduced, but absolutely direct and pure.
Our music is composed totally in my mind first and then I try to put it out of my brain. Everything is recorded at home with a minimum of equipment late at night.

Your music could seem almost naive, the melodies, the arpeggi and the arrangments, do you agree? And why you choose this way?

-|-|-» Belborn: I didn´t choose this way – it just happens that way! I can only create the music that flows out of myself. I´m doing what I have to do. I guess every “artist” (sorry, but I hate that word!) knows the inner force…
I understand that the music of Belborn could sound some kind of naïve, but I think the better word would be “honest”.

Seems there is an underground evolution in your disography: what is changed from your first release, more martial and gloomy, and “Y”. Your music it’s not the common neofolk, with always low voices, martial percussions, and the same rhythm guitar. Every song it’s different from the others, you also use different instruments.

-|-|-» Belborn: We really see ourselves as an underground band. We are totally independent and do everything on our own (music, lyrics, artwork, production, web-page…)! First of all we create music for our personal self and not for any kind of “special” people or scene. We do what we do and it could happen that we will sound completely different one day…

A lots of compilations in which you appears, what is your favourite and why?

-|-|-» Belborn: I guess the last one is always the favourite one (haha). Sincerely, I think that “Wir Rufen Deine WÖlfe” is a very unique work. A very interesting compilation, because every band did a special song, based on the great poem of Friedrich Hielscher. Until now it´s my most favourite compilation…
I would like to recommend the Hermann Hendrich-CD. A part of the earned money is used for the restoration of the halls and paintings of Hermann Hendrich.

Let’s talk about runes: nowdays a lot of bands use runes, but sometimes it seems more for fashion than for something else; what really mean runes for you, and why in your cd’covers appear only rune writings?

-|-|-» Belborn: We are aware that a lot of people don´t like it, that we use runes in such an obvious and public way. The decision has it´s origin in a late night conversation with an acquaintance (greetings to Hannover at this place!). We talked about runes, their history and the negative reputation nowadays (especially here in Germany!). We came to the conclusion, that it would be good to place runes as often as possible in the public.
It´s true that it seems to become a fashion to use runes. Anyway, we don´t care - it helps to make them public! Real rune magic will always be an appeal for special and few people.
Personally runes are “doors” and forces of power for us. If you “ask” them they can give you answers…

In your web site it’s written: “prepare you for a new golden age”…you’re everything but nihilist, do you really believe to see a new golden age? And according to you what’s golden?

-|-|-» Belborn: Of course I don´t expect to see a Golden Age – not in this life! If it will be really golden (and maybe the sun will always shine there!) I don´t want to see it anyway. Personally I don´t like the colour gold, but it symbolizes wealth (balance) and purity (justice). Hmmm, but if you look at history it stands for crime, greed and murder…

Let’s talk about your artworks and your pictures whose you personally take care. I’m also interested in the meaning of your logo, what it represents?

-|-|-» Belborn: Our logo is a kind of Phoenix. It´s built around the so called Wendehorn-rune (a form of the rune Hagal, that contains the “life” and the “death” rune). Our logo represents the ever turning cycle of everything: Life - death, day - night, victory - defeat, history - eternity…!!! The phoenix rises from the flames and so will every real value, feeling, or action in some kind of form always return.
There is not very much to say about our pictures and drawings. They are full of symbolic force, but it would take too much room and time to explain what excactly is represented. It´s up to the viewer to search for a meaning – for some of them it will mean nothing at all…

Last question: it’s true about your future collaboration whit Marylin Manson?! Ha ha ha!!! No, excuse me it’s a joke, Iwould like to know your favourite artists in music and in graphic art. Do you like David Bowie?!

-|-|-» Belborn: No, I don´t like David Bowie nowadays, but parts of his life are pretty interesting - Ziggy Stardust for example! A collaboration with Marylin Manson would be great. Hm, I guess I´ll write him an satanic e-mail soon…
At the moment my most favourite band is (still) Kirlian Camera. Angelo Bergamini is a genius! I´m also a big listener of all the “old WSD-bands”. Graphically I admire H.R. Giger, Joachim Luetke and Joe Coleman. For more “most favourite” please check the links on our web-page!
