L'AME IMMORTELLE

Il pubblico come ha accolto il vostro nuovo album? Come hanno reagito i vostri fan?

-|-|-» Thomas: Hanno apprezzato il nuovo album molto in fretta. Eravamo un po' preoccupati perchè abbiamo avuto un evoluzione nello stile: il nuovo album ha comportato l'uso di chitarre e batteria, dunque eravamo insicuri su come il pubblico potesse reagire a questo, ma alla fine hanno reagito nella maniera migliore.. meglio che rispetto ai nostri vecchi album: abbiamo raggiunto la posizione più alta nelle classifiche. Siamo stati per tre settimane alla posizione
numero 38 della classifica ufficiale tedesca (notare bene: non delle classifiche indipendenti) e questo, per una goth band è un grande risultato, sembra che tutti abbiano apprezzato molto il nuovo stile in particolare per l'uso delle chitarre e della batteria che rendono il sound più organico. Il tour che abbiamo cominciato in febbraio dopo la realizzazione dell'album, riflette questo umore generale.

La musica è ciò che vi permette di vivere o avete degli altri lavori ?

-|-|-» Sonja/Thomas: No, entrambi possiamo vivere solo di musica perchè consacriamo tutto il nostro tempo ad essa e alla parte commerciale; perchè vedi, c'è la parte creativa e poi la parte commerciale che non può essere accantonata.. anche essa è parte della musica stessa e quindi non potremmo avere del tempo per fare altri lavori.

Pensate che il vostro impegno in progetti alternativi possa essere un rischio per i L'ame immortelle come band? O essi sono solo un altro modo per
esprimere nuovi aspetti della vostra creatività?

-|-|-» Sonja: Nei L' Ame immortelle posso esprimere la mia creatività ma ci sono momenti in cui ho bisogno di fare un passo in più e sperimentare cose nuove. Quindi ho dato il via al progetto Persephone ma questo non può essere considerato un pericolo per i L'ame anzi, può essere un vantaggio per la band... realizzare qualcosa al di fuori di essa, collaborare con altri musicisti.. in questo modo puoi imparare da diverse esperienze e tornare alla
band originale con un nuovo entusiasmo.

Avete già delle idee per il vosto prossimo album?

-|-|-» Thomas: Lavoriamo su nuovo materiale in continuazione e quando un album è finito cominciamo immediatamente a lavorare su nuove canzoni, e lo facciamo ogni giorno finchè arriva il momento in cui sentiamo che le cose sono mature per realizzare un nuovo album: quindi non lavoriamo su un nuovo album pezzo per pezzo ma in un costante processo evolutivo.
Ho già parecchie canzoni da parte ma non siamo ancora pronti per un nuovo album, dunque non posso fare piani.

Cosa è cambiato nei L'Ame immortelle dopo la dipartita di Hannes? E come mai ha lasciato la band?

-|-|-» Sonja: Aveva seri problemi di salute mentale e dato che viaggiavamo molto e passavamo molto tempo in studio di registrazione, era troppo problematico gestire questa situazione; e anche se era ancora in grado di scrivere nuove canzoni, non poteva essere in studio con noi .. e questo non faceva altro che peggiorare di giorno in giorno, quindi alla fine ci siamo divisi. (decisamente dispiaciuta.. ndr)

Quindi quando suonate dal vivo vi avvalete di diversi collaboratori o utilizzate sempre gli stessi musicisti?

-|-|-» Thomas: Cerchiamo sempre di mantenere vivo l' interesse del pubblico e quindi al momento annoveriamo Ashley Daymour (ex Sanguis Et Cinis e leader fondatore degli austriaci Whispers In The Shadows) alle chitarre e Martin Parzer alle tastiere.
Per quest'anno questa è la line up definitiva ma il progetto è estremamente aperto per cui è possibile che il prossimo anno utilizzeremo altri e diversi
musicisti sebbene naturalmente abbiamo un circolo di amici con cui collaboriamo con maggiore continuità.
Nel 2001 avevamo guest per voce e chitarre, in questo tour abbiamo preferito puntare su chitarre e tastiere mentre per il prossimo potremmo considerare
voce, tastiere e batteria: l' importante per noi è cambiare per mantenere vivo l' interesse della gente.

Vi è un particolare musicista col quale amereste collaborare? Sonja, ad esempio so che tu sei appassionata di Sopor Aeternus...

-|-|-» Sonja: Sì, mi piace moltissimo ma non potrei mai collaborare con Anne Varney poichè penso che sia perfetto così com'è!
Beh, mi piacerebbe duettare con Dave Gahan dei Depeche Mode o nuovamente con Sean Brennan dei London After Midnight ... mi è piaciuto molto cantare con lui!

Quali sono le vostre band preferite dentro o al di fuori della scena?

-|-|-» Sonja: Mi piacciono Nick Cave, Bijork, Peter Gabriel, i Tindersticks, Nine Inche Nails e Depeche Mode.

Germania a parte qual è la nazione in cui vendete di più ? Forse il vostro paese, l' Austria?

-|-|-» Thomas: No, l' Austria non è un buon mercato per noi. Abbiamo invece ottime vendite in Russia (abbiamo anche suonato a Mosca), anche gli USA sono un buon bacino di vendita per noi mentre quanto al futuro puntiamo molto sul Sudamerica.. per quanto la Germania resti il nostro target numero uno senza alcuna ombra di dubbio.

Parlando della Russia cosa ci dite della situazione della pirateria musicale che sappiamo essere un grande problema nell' ex Unione Sovietica ?

-|-|-» Thomas: La situazione in Russia può essere vista sotto due punti di vista: se vendi 1000 CD in Russia significa che senza pirateria ne avresti probabilmente venduti 3000 (perchè questi sono i numeri indicativi delle copie pirata) e questo non è sicuramente una buona cosa.. ma se la vedi da un altro punto di vista: suonando la', con 3000 copie vendute tra legali ed illegali, ti assicurerai la presenza di almeno 1500 spettatori nei Live! Si tratta di numeri interessanti.
Il problema della Russia è che di fatto non molte persone possono permettersi di acquistare i CD originali e così ricorrono al mercato nero ma almeno, anche se in questo modo, impareranno a conoscere la tua musica e poi pagheranno per vederti suonare dal vivo e così il cerchio si chiuderà...

Leggendo tra le righe i testi dell' album emergono costanti riferimenti ad una storia d' amore finita: ritieni che la malinconia ed un atteggiamento
introspettivo possano migliorare la qualità di un brano?

-|-|-» Thomas: Non solo penso che esse siano un elemento per essere ispirati ma anche che possano essere l' unico modo!
Io sono in grado di comporre solo quando mi trovo in uno stato d' animo triste e malinconico.
Credo che scrivere musica e testi, rappresenti una sorta di autoterapia, quindi se sono di ottimo umore non mi sento minimamente in grado di
comporre. Per me scrivere è una esperienza di catarsi e pertanto posso scrivere musica soltanto se mi sento triste.

A mio avviso "Betrayal" è il miglior pezzo di "Als die liebe starb": può essere considerato come un simbolo di un nuovo modo di comporre? "Betrayal"
è infatti estremamente particolare ,piuttosto diversa dallo stile abituale dei L' Ame Immortelle..

-|-|-» Sonja: mh, non sono d' accordo.. non trovo che sia diversa dal nostro consueto stile.

-|-|-» Thomas: A mio avviso "Betrayal" incorpora tutti gli elementi che abbiamo sempre utilizzato sinora anche se magari in maniera un po' differente. In linea di massima abbiamo cercato di utlizzare lo stesso stile di sempre ma forse in una maniera più elegante. Alla fine noi combiniamo gli elementi rock, electro e classico.. e li mischiamo insieme. E' questo che dà origine al tipico sound dei L' Ame Immortelle che caratterizza anche la stessa Betrayal.

Quali sono i brani che amate di più suonare dal vivo ?

-|-|-» Sonja: "Life will never be the same again" e "Love is lost"

-|-|-» Thomas: Per me sicuramente "Bitterkeit" perchè è il nostro classico anche se devo dire che in passato aveva cominciato ad annoiarmi ma ora abbiamo abbellito il pezzo (introducendo chitarre ed altri elementi..) e sono tornato ad amarla.
Sono poi d' accordo anch'io su "Life will never be the same again" che trovo essere un pezzo piuttosto articolato e complesso e che ci consente
quindi delle parti d' improvvisazione.

How your audience has welcomed your new album? How do fans reacted to it?

-|-|-» Thomas: They have quickly appreciated the new album, we had a kind of mixed feeling because we've had an evolution in style: it incorporates the use of guitars and drums now, so we were insecure about how the audience would react to it but at the end they have react in a better way than with the old album: we've reached the highest chart position also in the normal german chart we've reached the 38 position for three weeks, that is a big result for a band, which belong to Gothic and it seems everyone has appreciated the new style very much, particulary for the real guitars and drums that make the sound more organic and the tour, which we did after the released after the realize of the album in february reflects this general mood.

Music is what allows you to live or do you have a side job?

-|-|-» Sonja/Thomas: No, both of us can live with the music, because we devote all our time to music and to its business, because you see there is the art part and then the business part which you can't put our because it's a part of it and so we couldn't have any time left to do other jobs.

Do you think your involvement in side projects could be a risk for L'ame immortelle as a band? Or they just a way to express other sides of your creativity?

-|-|-» Sonja: Yes, in l'Ame immortelle I can express my creativity but there are times I think I have to make a step further and experiment new stuff, so I started the Persephone project but this is not a risk for l'Ame immortelle, otherwhise can be very good for a band to work out of it, collaborate with other musicians because you can learn from different experiences and when you come back with a new enthusiasm.

Do you have already an idea for your next project?

-|-|-» Thomas: We continually work on new material and when an album is finished we immediately begin to work on new songs every day and at one point you feel things are mature to realize a new album so we don't work on albums step by step, it's a constant process. I have already a lot of new song but we are not ready for a new album so we don't know.

What has changed in L'Aime immortelle after the leaving of Hannes? And why has he left the band ?

-|-|-» Sonja: (with a very sad face) He had serious healthy and psychic problems and so as we travelled a lot and spent so much time in studio, he has troubles to face this situation, and though he was still able to write new songs, he couldn't be in studio with us and that used to get worse all the time and so we had to split up.

So when you play live do you use always the same collaborators or do you have the same musicians?

-|-|-» Thomas: We try to keep alive the audience's interest so at the moment we have
Ashley Dayour formerly in Sanguis et Cinis and leading founder of Whispers in the Shadows at guitars and Martin Parzer at keyboards for this year, but the project is very open so maybe next year we'll have different musicians, though of course we have a circle of friends who love to collaborate with: in 2001 we had guitars and vocals, this time we have liked to underline guitars and keyboards, the next could be with more vocals, guitars and drums : we always change trying to keep people interest alive.

Is there a particular musician you would love to have a collaboration with? Sonja, I know you are fond of Sopor Aeternous' music...

-|-|-» Sonja: Yes, I like him very much but I couldn't collaborate with him because I think he's perfect as he is! And I'd like to sing with Dave Gahan or again with Sean Brennan (London After Midnight singer) because I've liked very much to sing with him, it has been really cool.

What is your favourite band in or outside the scene?

-|-|-» Sonja: I like Nick Cave, Bijork, Peter Gabriel, Tinder Sticks, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode.

Which is the country except of course Germany where you sell more? Is it your country, Austria?

-|-|-» Thomas: No, Austria is a very bad market for us, but we have good sell in Russia, we have played in Moscow, also America is a big market for us if we think about future and South America could become very interesting though the main market is Germany.
Germany has no comparison.

Speaking about Russia, what about the music piracy which I know it's a big problem there?

-|-|-» Thomas: In Russia you can see the situation in two different ways: if you sell 1000 cds in Russia, without piracy you probably could have sold 3000 copies because they always do bootlegs copies, so when you think you've sold 1000 copies you can calculate if you play there you will have at least 1500 people, which for us mean a big big concert. So numbers are interesting. The problem in Russia is very few people can effort to spend money for cds so they buy copies at the black market but at least they learn to know your music then come to see us play because they have no other choose to have the live experiences...

Reading the titles and the lyrics in your new album, emerge a constant reference to a dead love story, do you think a melancholy and introspective mood can improve the songs quality?

-|-|-» Thomas: I think it's not just an element but that is the only way to do it, I can only compose music if I am in a melancholic mood, i think writing music and lyrics is a kind of therapy, but if I am in a good and happy mood, I don't feel able to write because for me music is a cleaning experience, i only can write music when I am sad.

For me Betrayal is the best song of the album, can it be a symbol of your new song-line? I think it's very particular, very different from the usual l'Ame immortelle style.

-|-|-» Sonja: I can' t see the question.. because I don't think it's different from our style.

-|-|-» Thomas: In my opinion "Betrayal" has got all the features we have always been using right now even if sometimes we did it in a different way.
We have tried to make the same sound style than before but maybe in a more smart way. At the end we combine and mix the rock element,the electro
element and the classical element and this is the mixture that gives birth to the typical L' Ame Immortelle sound that you can hear in "Betrayal" too.

Which are your favorite songs to play live?

-|-|-» Sonja: "Life will never be the same again" and "Love is lost"

-|-|-» Thomas: I surely love "Bitterkeit" because it's one of our classical songs but well,I have to admit that in the past I've started to be bored to play
it but now we have improved this track adding some guitars and other stuff and I am back to love it again.
So do I agree for "Life will never be the same again" that it's one of our most complex tracks and that can allow to us to make some improvisation.
