Perché avete
scelto il nome "IKON"?

Chris: Diciamo che è nato per
errore. Circa 12 anni fa a qualcuno venne in mente questo
nome, ci è piaciuto, lo abbiamo cominciato ad usare
ed è rimasto legato a ciò che producevamo..
Non vuol significare nulla in particolare, lo abbiamo semplicemente
tenuto, la nostra band non aveva un nome. Da quella notte
nel 1991 quindi ci chiamiamo così. All'inizio suonavamo
semplicemente per divertimento, ora è tutto diverso,
facciamo le cose più sul serio.
In tutti questi anni
diciamo che gli Ikon hanno sempre cambiato stile (periodo
differente, stile differente): gothic, folk, elettronica ...

Chris: Si, in effetti diciamo che
gli Ikon sono una combinazione di tutti questi stili. A me
piace mettere nella nostra musica elettronica, chitarre ...
all'inizio eravamo molto legati al post-punk e alle sonorità
Joy Division, poi abbiamo cercato di evolvere il nostro sound.
Quindi quali sono
state le vostre influenze musicali?

Ikon: Le 3 grandi influenze per Ikon sono state:
- Joy Division
- Death in June
- La scena elettronica rappresentata dal sound di New Order
e Kraftwerk.
Cosa pensi della scena
musicale di oggi?

Chris: Dopo aver viaggiato in UK,
in Europa fin qui, posso dire con sicurezza che la musica
sta nuovamente cambiando, essendo basata maggiormente sulle
chitarre. A casa, in Australia, se vai in un pub la musica
è più orientata sull'elettronica e non senti
niente musica australiana, oppure Ikon o Sisters of Mercy:
questo perché la generazione più giovane vuole
l'elettronica. Quando noi eravamo più giovani ed andavamo
nei pub quello che si ascoltava era Joy Division.. Sisters
of Mercy.. tutto miscelato assieme. Oggi è a senso
unico. Comunque le persone sono fiduciose come me, che anche
lì la musica si orienti di nuovo maggiormente verso
un suono più chitarristico.
Navighi in Internet,
e se si, fino a che punto aiuta la musica, e a che livello
gli MP3 sono necessari?

Chris, Dino: Penso
che Internet ancora si stia sviluppando e sia buono per la
promozione, mentre gli MP3 sono ottimi e pessimi allo stesso
tempo, in quanto ti permettono di far conoscere la tua musica
ma nel momento in cui vengono scaricati gratuitamente, toccano
la vendita della tua musica. Internet, in futuro, se sarà
controllato diverrà il mezzo principale per l'attività
di labels, bands e quant'altro ma se questo non avverrà,
non so sinceramente verso quale frontiera ci possa portare:
è un'utile risorsa per scoprire se una cosa ti piace
o non ti piace, è un mezzo pubblicitario gratuito…
tra l'altro noi abbiamo degli MP3 sul nostro sito che permettono
di sentire in che direzione musicale la band stia andando.
Credo, infine, che se una persona sia appassionata di musica
e scopre che quella band aggrada il proprio gusto, comprerà
il CD originale invece di masterizzarselo da MP3, come ad
esempio faccio io, essendo un grande fan della musica in genere
… ma se vuoi una canzone sola, ritengo la gente probabilmente
scarichi senza comprare.
I vostri progetti
per il futuro?

Chris: Stiamo scrivendo un nuovo album
che uscirà l'anno prossimo, con più chitarre,
mentre stiamo al momento portando questa compilation "From
Angels to Ashes: 1997-2003" per il tour, in quanto 4
anni fa avevamo molti CD e la gente non sapeva quali comprare.
Inoltre, siccome Michael ha abbandonato la band nel '96, non
era facile per le persone comprare un CD magari del '94 e
capire da quello cosa stiamo facendo al momento. Questo CD
"Secrests Within: a Compilation Retrospective" invece
è una raccolta tratta da tutte le compilation fatte
negli anni, raccolte in un unico disco.
In questi anni avete
partecipato a diversi festivals, conosciuto diverse band..

Chris: Si è vero, abbiamo incontrato
moltissime persone, fatto amicizia con alcune … questo
ci ha permesso di conoscere persone che sicuramente in Australia
non avremmo conosciuto, una scena che ci sorprende ogni volta.
In Australia è molto più difficile, mentre qui
abbiamo chi ci supporta, specialmente in Germania!
Qual è la musica
che preferisci ascoltare?

Chris: Guarda, ho diverse collezioni
di CD: Depeche Mode, Cure, U2, mi piacciono molto gli anni
'80 e ultimamente mi hanno positivamente impressionato gli
Interpol di New York. Preferisco la musica con le chitarre
ma non disdegno l'elettronica, se ricalca i miei gusti musicali.
Quando compongo ad esempio posso avere come riferimento elettronica
o Joy Division, non importa: l'importante è che rispecchi
il mio gusto personale.
Cosa rappresentano
i logo che spesso si trovano nelle vostre copertine?

Chris: Alcuni logo li disegno da solo, alcuni
li riuso … ad esempio puoi vedere il logo di Subversion,
che ho usato anche per oltre cose. La cosa più importante
è che ci siamo rotti dell'ottusità della religione
e delle cose che la gente fa per la religione: si deve essere
liberi di decidere cosa fare o non fare, senza essere costretti
a sottostare a dogmi e comportamenti prefissati. Spesso la
nostra simbologia è volta a dimostrare questo tipo
di libertà e il nostra incomprensione verso le bugie
e la corruzione che la religione provoca nelle persone.
Vorrei che ci parlassi
dei problemi tecnici di stasera..

Chris: Tutto andava per il meglio,
ci stavamo divertendo e il pubblico si divertiva con noi …
sicuramente sarebbe stato meglio finire il concerto, purtroppo
non è dipeso da noi.
Qual è il significato
di "Condemnation" ? E le diverse versioni di "Subversion"
? Perché risuonare "Fall apart" ?

Chris: Alcune canzoni hanno un vero
e proprio significato, altre invece non lo hanno ma vivono
solo per il gusto estetico e la sonorità che certe
parole danno … quando scrissi "Condemnation"
14 anni fa, non aveva un vero e proprio significato: suonava
bene. Di questa canzone poi ho scritto il titolo e la musica,
per quanto riguarda le parole avresti dovuto chiedere a Michael
… All'inizio scrivevo la musica e poi davo la canzone
a Michael per le parole. Ad un certo punto Michael aveva scelto
di prendere direzioni differenti e noi non eravamo d'accordo,
perciò acconsentimmo che lasciasse la band, ed ora
non so cosa stia facendo. Per quanto riguarda "Subversion",
è stata la prima canzone che abbiamo scritto io e Rino
quando Michael lasciò la band. Ci sono stati diversi
singoli, tra cui anche un'edizione esclusiva per il mercato
americano, con canzoni inedite. Era il nostro modo di far
vedere che avevamo ancora tanto da dire. Ovviamente risuonare
un classico di Death in June come "Fall apart" è
stato come celebrare il nostro amore per quella band. Inoltre,
in quel caso la mia voce era più adatta a certe sonorità
di quella di Michael.

Why did you choose
the name "Ikon"?

Chris: We can say that it was born
for a mistake. About 12 years ago someone thought about this
name, we liked it, we started to use it and it remained connected
to the things we produced… It doesn't mean anything
in particular, we just kept it, our band didn't have a name.
Since that night in 1991 we are so-called. At first we played
just for fun, now everything is different, we do things more
seriously.
We can say that in
all this years Ikon always changed style (different period,
different style): gothic, folk, electronic ...

Chris: Yes, as a matter of fact Ikon
are a combination of all this styles. I like putting in our
music electronic, guitars… at the beginning we were
most united with post-punk and Joy Division's sounds, than
we tried to evolve our sound.
So, what were your
musical influences?

What do you think
about the actual musical scene?

Chris: After travelling in UK, in
Europe as far as here, I can firmly say that music is changing
again, because it's essentialy based on guitars. At home,
in Australia, if you go in a pub music is more oriented on
electronic and you don't listen to any australian music, or
Ikon and Sister of Mercy: this because the younger generation
wants electronic. When we were younger and we went in pubs
we listened to Joy Division… Sisters of Mercy…
everything mixed up. Today it's one-way. Anyway people are
trustful like me that also there music can be oriented again
towards a more guitaristic sound
Do you visit the web
and, if yes, as far as music helps you, and at what level
are mp3 necessary?

Chris, Dino: I think
internet is in developping again and it's good for promotion,
instead mp3 are the best and the worst thing at the same time,
because they allow you to make your music known but when they
are downloaded without any cost, they touch the selling of
your music. Internet, in the future, if will be controlled
will become the most important resource for labels' activities,
bands and so on but if this will not happen, sincerely I don't
know to what frontier we can go: it's a useful resource to
know if you like a thing or not, it's an advertising media
without any cost… most of all we have some mp3s on our
site that allow to hear in what musical direction the band
is going. I think, in the end, that if a person is fond of
music and discovers that likes a band, will buy the original
cd instead of coping it with mp3, as I do, because I'm a fan
of music in general… but if you want just one song,
I think people download it without buying it
What are your projects
for the future?

Chris: We are writing a new album
that will be out the next year, with more guitars, while at
the moment we are bringing this compilation "From angels
to ashes: 1997-2003" for the tour, because 4 years ago
we had many cds and people didn't know what to buy. Moreover,
because Michael left the band in '96, it wasn't easy for people
buying a cd for example of '94 and understand what we were
doing at the moment. This cd "Secrets within: a compilation
retrospective" instead is a collection taken from all
the compilations made in the last years, all collected in
one single cd
In this years you
partecipated to some festivals, you knew some bands..

Chris: Yes, it's true, we met many
people, became friends with some… this allowed us to
know people that in Australia we surely couldn't have known,
a scene that surprises us every time. In Australia is more
difficult, instead here we have who supports us, expecially
in Germany!
What music do you
like to listen to?

Chris: I have differents cd's collections:
Depeche Mode, Cure, U2, I like a lot the '80s and in this
period I've been impressed positively by Interpol of New York.
I prefer music with guitars but I don't scorn electronic,
if it fits my musical taste. When I write for example I can
have as a reference elctronic or Joy Division, it doesn't
matter, the important is that reflects my personal taste.
What does the logo
that often appear on your covers represent?

Chris: I draw some logos alone, I reclaim
some others… for example you can see Subversion's logo,
that I used also for other things. The most important thing
is that we are bothered by the dullness of religion and things
that people do for religion: we must be free to decide what
do to or not to do, without being compelled to lie beneath
dogmas and pre-established behaviours. Often our symbology
has the intent to show this kind of freedom and our incomprehension
towards lies and corruption that religion promote in people.

Chris: Everything was going well,
we were having a lot of fun and the public too… surely
it would have been better to finish the concert, but it didn't
depend on us
What's the meaning
of "Condemnation"? And the different versions of
"Subversion"? Why do you play again "Fall apart"?

Chris: Some songs have a precise meaning,
some others instead haven't but live just for the estetic
taste and sounds that some words give… When I wrote
"Condemnation" 14 years ago, it had not a precise
meaning: it sounded good. Of this songs I then wrote title
and music, concearning lyrics you have to question Michael…
At the beginning I wrote music and then I gave the songs to
Michael for the words. At a certain point Michael decided
to take different directions and we didn't agree, so we let
him leave the band, and I don't know what he's doing now.
Speaking about "Subversion", it was the first song
that I and Rino wrote when Michael left the band.
There were different singles, also an exclusive edition for
the american market, with previously unreleased songs. It
was our way to show that we had a lot of other things to say.
Obviously playing again a Death in June classic as "Fall
apart" was like celebrating our love for that band. Moreover,
in that case my voice was more suitable to certain melodies
than the voice of Michael
