Avete avuto un successo molto rapido, come avete vissuto tutto cio ?

-|-|-» Andy: Si è stata una situazione molto buona, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di fare concerti in tutto il mondo.. sono molto felice di essere presente in questa scena attuale. Ho cominciato a fare musica sin da quando avevo 13 anni, per me è stato un lungo percorso anche se ad altri può apparire breve, devo dire che questo però mi ha tenuto molto in contatto con il pubblico. La prendiamo tutti in maniera molto calma, non so cosa dire.. ne sono soddisfatto ma siamo umani come tutti gli altri! E' comunque un onore per noi essere sul palco e aver di fronte tanta gente che ci segue.

Conosco la Finlandia e ho notato che nel nord Europa va molto il metal, .in Norvegia il black metal ma l'elettronica non è cosi popolare… voi siete Norvegesi puoi dirci di piu ?

-|-|-» Andy: La Finlandia è molto difficile; hanno una bella scena elettronica ma è molto ristretta mentre hanno un enorme scena metal; la Norvegia ha un enorme scena metal e black metal e anche una band poco famosa può riuscire ad avere un pubblico di cinquemila persone ad un concerto. Comunque anche la scena gotica e industriale è buona per un paese cosi piccolo, devi considerare che siamo solamente quattromilioni di persone..

Da che città venite ?

-|-|-» Andy: Da Fredrikstad. Il 95% dei gruppi di questo genere vengono da Fredrikstad.. probabilmente perchè in questa città teniamo forte la scena sin dagli anni 80; mi ricordo che eravamo giovani quando nell'86/87 andammo a vedere il concerto dei Front 242 e fu una cosa enorme per noi e fu anche motivo per mantenere la scena viva. Ci sono moltissimi piccoli negozi, Oslo è a due ore di viaggio ma non avremmo avuto lo stesso successo, forse perchè la città è troppo grande.. nelle piccole città invece la gente è più aperta di mente, non ti importa di impressionare le persone che hai intorno, ne se gli altri sono diversi da te è tutto molto piu semplice..

Ma nella piccola città che fai vai a pescare ? In barca per fiordi ? (risate n.d.r.)

-|-|-» Andy: No, no.. io vado a pescare e basta, è quello che fanno tutti i Norvegesi! Ovviamente per trascorrere il tempo in pace per ore… per me è come meditazione, da solo.. butti l'amo nel mare e aspetti a lungo.. magari non peschi nulla ma rifletti molto. Ovviamente adesso siamo in un paese molto diverso, l'Italia, ma non c'è niente come la vista del tramonto, di quei colori particolari, delle montagne di fronte al mare come da noi.. guardi questo mentre peschi..e pensi.

Tornando a noi..perchè avete cambiato direzione dal punto di vista musicale ?

-|-|-» Andy: Siamo solamente andati oltre col nostro nuovo album. Abbiamo speso molto più tempo nella composizione, senza nessuna fretta, siamo molti felici del disco ma avremmo potuto farlo ancora meglio e questa è la strada che vogliamo percorrere: migliorare. Anche se vogliamo conservare le cose che abbiamo fatto continuando a fare questo genere di musica, mi piace fare esperimenti con stili nuovi e nuove idee.. sarebbe noioso che ogni album suonasse alla stessa maniera. Ci sono un paio di gruppi famosi che hanno le loro canzoni tutte uguali, a differenza loro io voglio solamente progredire. Le cose su cui stiamo lavorando sono più dure, con piu grooves di musica house ma comunque con suoni molto più Industrial. Prendo gli house grooves, li giro, li trasformo.. rendendo il suono più sporco. Sono molto eccitato per il nuovo materiale a cui stiamo lavorando..

Come procede "Sector 9" ? (progetto parallelo di Sebastian & Andy n.d.r.)

-|-|-» Andy: Non esiste più con quel nome ora è chiamato Moonitor, come il monitor del PC ma con due "o" come la luna, moon in inglese.. perchè è un progetto appunto basato su segni di forme di vita aliena, non i dischi volanti a forma di salsiccia.. ma quei segni che ogni tanto si riscontrano nei secoli. E' un progetto molto più trance, progressive house.. non abbiamo molto tempo per lavorarci sopra ma ogni tanto ci torniamo sopra, vedremo cosa ci porterà il futuro.

Com'è andato il party di Capodanno a Rotterdam ? (2002 n.d.r.)

-|-|-» Andy: È stato veramente bello, ci siamo divertiti molto, io sicuramente mi ricordo qualcosa, anzi.. mi ricordo tutto.. Christian non si ricorda Niente!! In realtà ero sobrio perchè se avessi bevuto molto forse mi sarei dimenticato anche le canzoni. Era molto tempo che non suonavamo dal vivo e ad essere onesti non ho fatto nemmeno le prove, quindi molte volte ho dovuto modificare i testi perchè non li ricordavo, però ripeto è stato molto divertente, la gente si è divertita, ed ha apprezzato la nostra musica, un ottimo modo per farci conoscere.

Questa è la prima volta che suonate in Italia cosa ne pensate ?

-|-|-» Andy: Siamo arrivati ieri notte, abbiamo preso qualcosa da mangiare, molto difficile da descrivere come impatto.. pero se tutta la scena italiana fosse come quella di questa sera sarebbe sensazionale. Non sono molto informato su come procedono le cose qui, conosco un gruppo ma non ricordo il nome.. forse cominciava con la C? o con la K.. (prove di nomi senza risultato..ndr.) Domani suoniamo a Milano mi auguro sia una buona serata anche li.

Che programma utilizzate per comporre le vostre canzoni o quali strumenti ?

-|-|-» Andy: Attualmente non utilizziamo nessuno strumento per comporre. Quelli di stasera, del concerto, li abbiamo presi in prestito, non abbiamo portato nulla perchè avremmo dovuto spendere troppo per il trasporto. In studio utilizziamo il Cubase.. siamo sponsorizzati da Steinberg (casa del Cubase n.d.r.) quindi abbiamo sempre le ultime novità. Per esempio ora abbiamo anche l'ultima versione ma non l'abbiamo ancora utilizzata. Odio i programmi che hanno i suoni preregistrati e che non sono modificabili, utilizziamo il Cubase riutilizzando le parti .midi per i suoni puri di cassa per esempio (che comunque poi trasformiamo) poi usiamo tantissimi strumenti come il Virus Access… cose di questo genere.

Cosa ti aspettati dal futuro, magari riguardo la carriera musicale..

-|-|-» Andy: Io non mi aspetto nulla. L'unica cosa che vorrei è continuare a fare questo mestiere fin quando potrò pagarmici l'affitto di casa. Non mi importa di avere molti soldi anche se, certo, è normale che a tutti fanno comodo.. l'unica cosa che mi aspetto dalla vita è di essere sempre in grado di fare quello che voglio fare.

Altri progetti in vista?

-|-|-» Andy: Sto lavorando ad un progetto laterale di direzione noise- industrial genere un'po alla Wumpscut.. non so ben definirtelo ma ha un suono industrial molto potente. Probabilmente uscirà durante il prossimo anno.. allora ne riparleremo meglio a cose fatte.

In che rapporti sono gli Icon of Coil con Assemblage23 (e XP8 in questo concerto) ?

-|-|-» Andy: Ho incontrato gli XP8 per la prima volta ieri, mentre gli A23 li conoscevo già (diversi tour negli Stati Uniti assieme, feste varie..) sono davvero dei ragazzi grandiosi. Questo è il primo show del tour con loro è sarà sicuramente fantastico lavorare assieme..domani saremo a Milano.

You had a rapid success, how did you feel all of this ?

-|-|-» Andy: Yes, it's been a very good situation, we had the possibility of making concerts all over the world… I'm so happy to be in the actual scene. I started playing music since I was 13, for me it's been a long trip even if to the others it can seem short, I must say that this let me in contact with public. We all take it in the most quiet way, I don't know what to say… I'm satisfied but we are human as all the others! Anyway it's a pleasure for us to be on the scene and have in front of us so many people who follows us.

I know Finland and I noticed that in North Europe metal is much followed, in Norway black metal but electronic is not so popular… you come from Norway, can you tell us something more ?

-|-|-» Andy: Finland is very difficult; they have a beautiful electronic scene but it's much confined instead of the metal one; Norway has a big metal and black metal scene and also a not very famous band can have a public of 5000 persons in a concert. Anyway also gothic and industrial scene is good for a so small country, you must consider that we are only 4 millions of people…

From which town do you come from?

-|-|-» Andy: From Fredrikstad. The 95% of groups of this genre come from Fredrikstad… probably because in this town we hold the scene from the '80s; I remember that we were young when in 1986/1987 we went to see Front 242's concert and it was a big thing for us and also a reason for mantaining the scene alive. There are many little shops, Oslo is 2 hours far but we couldn't have success there, maybe because the city is too big… in smaller towns people are more open-minded, you don't care to impress people all around you, nor if other people are different from you, everything is more simple…

But what do you do in the small town, do you go fishing? Do you go with a boat around the fjord? (laugh n.d.r)

-|-|-» Andy: No, no… I go fishing and nothing at all, all the Norwegian do this! Obviously to spent time in peace for hours… for me it's like meditation, all alone… you throw the fishhook in the sea and wait for a long time… pheraphs you don't fish anything but you think a lot. Obviously now we are in a most different country, Italy, but there's nothing as seeing a sunset, some particular colours, mountains in front of the sea as in our contry… you see this while you're fishing… and you think.

Returning to us… why you changed direction in musical point of view ?

-|-|-» Andy: We've just gone further on with our new album. We spent much more time in composition, without any hurry, we are so happy for the album but we could have made it better and this is the way we want to follow: improve. Even if we want to keep the things we've done continuing to make this kind of music, I like doing experiments with new styles and new ideas. It can be boring if every album sounds the same. There's a couple of famous groups that have all their songs similar, in spite of them I just want to improve.The things on which we are working are more hard, with more house music grooves but anyhow with more industrial sounds. I take house grooves, I turn them, I transform them… making the sound more dirty. I'm so excited for the new material we are working on.

How does "Sector 9" proceed? (parallel project of Sebastian and Andy n.d.r)

-|-|-» Andy: It doesn't exist anymore with that name, now it's called Moonitor, as the pc's monitor but with 2 "o" like "moon" because it's a project based on signs of alien shapes of life, not Ufo with a sausage shape, but the signs that sometimes is possible to observe in the centuries. It's a more trance, progressive house project, we don't have so much time for working on it but sometimes we return back on it, we'll see what the future will bring us.

How was New Year's day party in Rotterdam?(2002 n.d.r.)

-|-|-» Andy: It was so beautiful, we had a lot of fun, I surely remember something, in fact I remeber everything... Christian remember nothing!! Honestly I was sober because if I would have drinked a lot pheraphs I would have forgot also songs. It was a lot of time that we didn't play live and to be honest I didn't either make tries, so I had to change lyrics many times because I didn't remember them, but I repeat we had a lot of fun, people had a lot of fun and appreciated our music, a good way to make us known.

This is the first time you play in Italy, what do you think about?

-|-|-» Andy: We arrived last night, we had something to eat, so difficult to describe the impact… but if all the italian scene is like the scene of this evening it can be sensational. I'm not very up-to-date of how are things here, I know a group but I don't remember the name, pheraphs it starts with C or K… (tries with some names without any result… n.d.r). Tomorrow we'll play in Milan I hope it will be a good evening too.

What program or which instruments do you use to create your songs?

-|-|-» Andy: Now we don't use any instrument for composition. The one we used this evening in the concert, we borrowed them, we didn't carry anything because we had to spend much for the transport. In studio we use Cubase… we are sponsorized by Steinberg (house of Cubase n.d.r) so we always have the last news. For example now we also have the latest version but we don't have used it yet. I hate programs with pre-registrated sounds and that are not modifiable, we use Cubase for example re-emploing midi parts for pure sounds of drum (that in any case we transform later) than we use many instruments such as Virus Acces… some stuff like this.

What do you aspect from the future, maybe about your musical carreer..

-|-|-» Andy: I don't expect anything. The only thing I'd like to do is doing this job until I can pay the lease with it. For me it doesn't matter to have a lot of money even if it's useful for eveyone… The only thing I aspect from life is to be always able to do the things I want.

Other incoming projects?

-|-|-» Andy: I'm working to a lateral project in the direction of noise-industrial, similar to Wumpscut… I can't define it well but it has a so powerful industrial sound. Probably it will go out the next year, then we will speak about it in a better way.

What are the relations of Icon of Coil with Assemblage 23 (and XP8 in this concert) ?

-|-|-» Andy: I met XP8 yesterday for the first time, instead I knew A23 from before (we had some tours in the States together, and various parties) they are great guys. This is the first show of the tour with them and it will be great working together, tomorrow we'll be in Milan.
