Qual è il significato del vostro nome e perchè proprio 23?

-|-|-» Tom: E nato per caso, doveva essere un composto di lettere e numeri. Quando iniziammo a pubblicare su alcune compilation canzoni con questo nome, le persone cominciarono a scriverci chiedendoci se lo avessimo scelto per la simbologia, in quanto collegato agli Illuminati e alla numerologia.. praticamente ha più significato per chi ci segue rispetto a come sia nato; in effetti è solo un nome e niente più.

Hai fatto moltissimi remix.. tra cui una compilation sull'11 settembre.. ("Silent Skies" n.d.r.)

-|-|-» Tom: Dan è un mio amico, voleva fare un disco di soli remix e cercava qualcuno che li facesse; credo molto nel suo lavoro cosi non è stato difficile prendere la decisione di lavorarci come mi aveva chiesto, inoltre, un altro motivo per cui ho voluto fare questo cd riguarda effettivamente le persone dell'11 settembre, c'era un senso di insicurezza per tutti quanti ma nello stesso tempo era qualcosa di lontano per me (non ho conosciuto nessuno che è morto in quel tragico avvenimento) cosi ho pensato che fosse meglio lasciare ad altre persone il compito di scrivere qualcosa sull'evento occupandomi solo della musica..

Come vivi la tua musica, sei soddisfatto?

-|-|-» Tom: Scrivo le canzoni principalmente per me in quanto mi gratifica molto (sono stato molto fortunato in questa strada mentre tanti altri no.. ) molte delle decisioni che prendo in campo musicale alla fine sono quelle che mi rendono felice e soddisfatto. Per me essere musicista è crescere sempre, evolversi, conoscere nuove cose e di conseguenza assumere nuovi stili, cose di questo genere.. a volte sperimentare. Ogni album degli Assemblage 23 rimane però facilmente identificabile.

Nell'ultimo album non utilizzi nessuna distorsione sulla voce..

-|-|-» Tom: È vero ma nello stesso tempo faccio cose che suonano e ricordano Assemblage 23 è questione di mantenere le cose fresche e rendermi felice, tutto qui.

E il progetto "Nerve Filter" come va?

-|-|-» Tom: E' un progetto che ho cominciato nel 1995, volevo fare qualcosa di totalmente differente per interrompere momentaneamente quello creato con A23 ma non ho avuto molto tempo recentemente per proseguire in questo campo, anche se sinceramente vorrei continuarlo. Ogni giorno per fare quello che vorrei mi servirebbero almeno 36 ore!

Influenze musicali?

-|-|-» Tom: Molte persone mi chiedono quali influenze ci siano state nella nostra musica e non penso sia eccessivo dire che i Kraftwerk sono stati per noi quello che i Beatles sono stati dopo gli anni 60 per le generazioni successive. Sicuramente i K. hanno influenzato importanti band techno e synthpop. Per me la creatività nell'elettronica è stata più presente nelle cose fatte nel passato, purtroppo nelle recenti non ne trovo molta. Il fatto quindi che i K. tornino a fare live la trovo una cosa fantastica sia per la band in se che per questo genere di musica.
Ad essere onesti purtroppo molte persone che ascoltano techno o house non conoscono i K. e non sanno che questi ragazzi hanno fatto cose prima di tutti gli altri..

Con cosa hai cominciato ad avvicinarti a questa corrente musicale?

-|-|-» Tom: Quando ho cominciato ad ascoltare musica sentivo principalmente punk: Clash, Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols.. molto della vecchia scuola punk ma allo stesso tempo ascoltavo i Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Front 242, le prime cose della Wax Trax! ad esempio tutto ciò che aveva il loro logo lo compravo perchè sapevo che avrei apprezzato sicuramente. Mi piaceva molto il sound elettronico, cosi quando per la prima volta ho ascoltato Industrial ed elettronica per me è stato facile miscelare l'introspettività dei Depeche con la potenza del punk..

Che ne pensi quindi dell'Industrial… Skinny Puppy, Ministry, NIN..?

-|-|-» Tom: Non metterei i dischi di Skinny Puppy nella stessa categoria di Ministry e NIN. Questi ultimi sono gruppi rock molto più creativi delle classiche rock band, che sperimentano, utilizzano l'elettronica.. mentre S.P. è uno dei gruppi non europei più importanti in questo filone. Se torniamo indietro negli anni in cui nacquero e operarono possiamo notare che hanno fatto cose innovative in quella parte di mondo, il loro Industrial non è la stessa cosa dei Clinik o band simili, sono stati fondamentali per la cultura di quel genere…

Com'è andato il concerto, soddisfatto?

-|-|-» Tom: C'era molta più gente di quella che mi aspettavo! Non eravamo mai stati in Italia prima, abbiamo trascorso momenti molto belli questa sera; quando siamo arrivati in questo posto (Spazio Boario n.d.r.) non sapevamo bene cosa aspettarci in realtà.. poi quando siamo entrati e abbiamo fatto il soundcheck abbiamo notato che l'impianto era ottimale.. è stato un buon inizio.

Che programma/strumentazioni utilizzi per le tue canzoni?

-|-|-» Tom: Tutti i sequencers partendo da Logic Audio, Cubase, Reason che è più lento rispetto ai primi due. Sono programmi molto simili ma Logic lo preferisco, è molto difficile lavorarci ma una volta imparata l' utilizzazione non tocchi nient'altro.

Cosa ti aspetti dalla tua carriera musicale?

-|-|-» Tom: Ho sempre fatto musica per divertimento non mi sarei mai aspettato di vivere della mia musica, è gia tanto, viaggiare per il mondo, visitare bei paesi come l'Italia e incontrare gente che mai avrei potuto incontrare altrimenti…

Finito il tour tornerai subito a lavoro?

-|-|-» Tom: Alla fine del tour ci dedicheremo al nostro lavoro si, ma prima ho bisogno di prendermi un'po di tempo di riposo..ogni tanto mi serve per chiarirmi le idee prima di ricominciare.

Per finire che ci puoi dire sui gruppi del concerto di stasera?

-|-|-» Tom: Riguardo agli XP8 posso dirti che ho fatto un remix per loro circa un anno fa ("She Says" n.d.r.); con gli Icon of Coil abbiamo fatto già diversi show e suonato in molti festival assieme; oggi è il primo giorno del tour ed è difficile dire come evolveranno le relazioni ma posso anticipare che tutti sono positivi e nessuno ha attitudini da rockstar.. è triste fare tour con band che si considerano più grandi di quello che sono, per ora comunque ci troviamo in sintonia.

What’s the meaning of your name and why you choose number 23?

-|-|-» Tom: It happened by chance, it had to be a mix of letters and numbers. We when started to publish on some compilations songs with this name, people started to wrote us asking if we choose the name for its symbology, in fact it’s connected with Illuminati and numerology… it has more meanings for our fans that for the way it has been created; it’s just a name, nothing more.

You make many remixes… also a compilation about 11th September ("Silent Skies" n.d.r.)

-|-|-» Tom: Dan is a friend of mine, he wanted to create a disco containing only remixes and he was searching someone who could do it; I believe in his way of working so it wasn’t difficult to make a decision; moreover, I chose to make this cd also for people of 11th September, there was a sense of insecurity for everyone of us but at the same time it was something far from me (I didn’t know anyone who died in that tragic way) so I thought it was better leave other people the due to write something about this; I was occupied only in music…

How do you feel with your music, are you satisfied?

-|-|-» Tom: I write songs expecially for myself, because it's a pleasure for my own person (I've been lucky by this way, while others weren't…). Most of the decisions I take in music are the ones that make me feel happy and satisfied. For me being a musician is a never-ending growth, it means to grow up, evolve, know new things and assume new styles by consequence, and other things like these… sometimes it means to experiment. Every album of Assemblage 23 is always easy to be identified.

In the last album you don't use voice distortion..

-|-|-» Tom: It's true but at the same time I do things that sound and remember Assemblage 23; the point is to maintain things new and feel happy, nothing more.

And what can you tell us about "Nerve filter" project?

-|-|-» Tom: I started this project in 1995, I wanted to do something totally different to stop a while what I created with A23 but in this days I didn't had much time to go up with this project, even if my intention is to continue it. Every day I need 36 hours to do all the things I want!

What are your musical influences?

-|-|-» Tom: Many people ask me what influences have been in our music and I think it's not excessive to say that Kraftwerk are for us what Beatles were after the '60s for the incoming generations. By sure Kraftwerk influenced many techno and synthpop bands. For me creativity in electronic was more present in the things done in the past, unfortunately in the actual one I can't see much of it. The fact that Kraftwerk returned to do lives is a great thing for the band itself but also for all this kind of music.
To be honest unfortunately many people who listen to techno or house doesn't know Kraftwerk, so they don't know that this guys made this things before all the others

How you approached to this kind of music?

-|-|-» Tom: When I started listening to music, I listened to punk music above all: Clash, Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols… many things of old punk school but at the same time I listened to Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Front 242, the first things of Wax Trax! For example I bought everything with its logo because I knew that I would have appreciated it. I liked electronic sound, so when I listened to Industrial and electronic for the first time it was easy for me to mix Depeche Mode's introspective with punk's power

What do you think about Industrial… Skinny Puppy, Ministry, NIN..?

-|-|-» Tom: I will not put Skinny Puppy's cd in the same category of Ministry and NIN. This last two groups are rock groups more creative than classical rock bands; they experiment, they use electronic… Skinny Puppy is one of the most important non-european group of this kind. If we return to the years in which they born and operated, we can see that they created many innovative things in that side of the world, their Industrial is not same as the Clinik one or other bands of that kind; they were indispensable for that kind of culture..

How was the concert; are you satisfied?

-|-|-» Tom: There were more people than I expected! We've never been in Italy before, we had beautiful moments this evening; when we arrived in this place (Spazio Boario) we didn't know what to expect… but when we entered and we had soundcheck we saw that the system was very good… it was a good start.

What kind of program/instruments do you use for your songs?

-|-|-» Tom: I use all the sequencers, starting from Logic Audio, Cubase, Reason which is slower. They are very similar programs but I prefer Logic; it's difficult to use it, but when you've learned you don't touch anything else.

What do you for your future musical career?

-|-|-» Tom: I always made music for fun, I never expected to live with my music, it's enough; to travel across the world, to visit beautiful places like Italy and to meet people that otherwise I'll never meet..

After tour will you begin immediately your work?

-|-|-» Tom: After the tour we will dedicate ourselves to our work, but before I need to have a relaxing period… sometimes I need this to clean up my ideas before starting again the work

To finish, what can you tell us about the other bands of this evening concert?

-|-|-» Tom: Speaking about XP8 I can tell you that I've done a remix for them a year ago ("She Says"); with Icon of Coil I've still made shows and I've played in many festivals; this is the first day of the tour and it's difficult to say how relationships will evolve but I can anticipate you that everyone is positive and none wants to be a rockstar… is sad doing tours woth bands that consider themselves better than they really are, now we feel in sintony.
